Encord Secures $60 Million in Series C Funding to Scale AI-Native Data Infrastructure

Encord's $60 Million Series C Funding Round

Encord, a prominent name in the realm of data infrastructure for physical AI, has successfully raised $60 million in a Series C funding round, led by Wellington Management. This latest round brings Encord's total funding to a hefty $110 million. Established venture capital firms, including Y Combinator, CRV, N47, Crane Venture Partners, and Harpoon Ventures, were joined by new investors Bright Pixel Capital and Isomer Capital. This significant investment is set to bolster Encord’s efforts in scaling its AI-native data infrastructure, which focuses on helping AI teams in the management, curation, annotation, and validation of multimodal data essential for physical AI systems.

The growth of physical AI systems is apparent through the company’s expansion, servicing over 300 AI teams worldwide, including industry giants like Woven by Toyota, Skydio, and AXA Financial. Encord has observed impressive growth, reporting a tenfold increase in revenue over the past year, coinciding with the surge in demand for physical AI applications.

The Turning Point for Physical AI

The Series C funding arrives at a pivotal moment for physical AI, which underpins technologies such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and drones. Analysts predict a transformative era for the sector, forecasting that within the next four years, upwards of 400 million AI robots will enter operation, valuing the physical AI industry at over $30 billion during the same timeframe. Unlike large language models that are trained on open internet data, physical AI models necessitate proprietary data drawn from various sources, including sensor feeds, video footage, and telemetry from robots. This requirement for specialized data infrastructure is critical as processing and storing such data is vastly more computationally intensive than traditional text data.

Ulrik Stig Hansen, co-founder and co-CEO of Encord, emphasizes that the challenge is not merely about building larger models but ensuring robust data readiness. He states, "Even the most sophisticated model will falter if the data it receives is inadequate, inconsistent, or poorly aligned with real-world conditions." This highlights the pressing need for a purpose-built AI-native data infrastructure to support data organization and filtration in real-time and at scale.

Growing Demand for Data Infrastructure

In just a year, the data on Encord's platform has surged from 1 Petabyte to over 5 Petabytes, outstripping the data utilized to train advanced models like GPT-4. Concurrently, Encord has experienced a tenfold rise in revenue from its physical AI clientele. The platform stands as a solution, empowering leading AI firms to capture, organize, and share data across the lifecycle of their models. Encord's technology tackles various aspects of data automation and processing that physical AI businesses encounter. This spans from data generation facilitation in the preparatory phase to fine-tuning models based on human feedback.

Bill Tinney, the senior director of AI product management at Vantor, a client of Encord, shared insights on the platform's impact, stating, "At Vantor, we develop AI for critical infrastructures and national security. We needed a data platform that could align with our extensive ambitions. Encord provides us with a unified data layer adaptable to the complexities of our geospatial data workflows, enabling smooth curation, annotation, and evaluation without tool fragmentation. For production AI teams, operationalizing their data effectively is a crucial competitive advantage."

Eric Landau, co-founder and co-CEO of Encord, elaborated that the recent funding will accelerate product development and market expansion. He notes, "Companies winning in the physical AI space recognize a truth that many are just starting to grasp – a model is only as good as the data that underpins it. We are establishing the infrastructure that will keep this data continuously usable as these systems learn and enhance in real-world conditions."
