Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Expands Service

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner has announced an exciting development for travelers looking to journey between Los Angeles and San Diego. Starting June 16, 2025, the agency will add a 12th roundtrip service, significantly enhancing travel options along southern California's iconic coastline. This expansion will provide both commuters and leisure travelers increased flexibility and convenience, as reported by the LOSSAN (Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo) Rail Corridor Agency.

The newly introduced trains will not only increase the frequency of travel but also feature afternoon and evening schedules that cater to a wider range of travel needs. The additional service is strategically timed to coincide with the summer travel season, attracting more passengers who wish to explore the picturesque coastal route.

Fred Jung, president of the LOSSAN agency and mayor of Fullerton, expressed enthusiasm about these changes, pointing out that “this expansion of service offers more options for transportation between San Diego and Los Angeles.” He emphasized the importance of restoring the Pacific Surfliner service to previous levels, aiming to improve travel access to popular events and destinations across southern California.

From the 16th of June, passengers can expect:
  • - Train 582 Southbound departing from Los Angeles Union Station at 4:10 PM and arriving at San Diego Santa Fe Depot by 7:04 PM.
  • - Train 593 Northbound departing from San Diego Santa Fe Depot at 8:10 PM, reaching Los Angeles Union Station by 10:57 PM.

Jason Jewell, the executive director of LOSSAN, highlighted that this decision reinforces their commitment to expanding passenger rail accessibility in southern California. “The additional frequencies provide greater travel flexibility while supporting a convenient and dependable transport option,” he stated, noting that these additional roundtrips fill crucial gaps in the schedule for travelers.

The current Pacific Surfliner’s operation now offers a total of 12 daily roundtrips between Los Angeles and San Diego. Moreover, travelers can enjoy five daily roundtrips between San Diego and Goleta, along with three full corridor roundtrips from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. Furthermore, the Amtrak Thruway Bus Service provides guaranteed connections to Pacific Surfliner trains, extending travel options north to Oakland and southeast to Indio through various locations.

Covering an impressive 351 miles, the Pacific Surfliner route traverses through six counties and serves 29 stations from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. The service expansion reflects a concerted effort by the LOSSAN agency and its partners to enhance regional rail services and the customer experience. This is part of their ongoing work to restore operations to pre-pandemic levels, which previously included 13 daily roundtrips along this corridor.

Passengers can look forward to modern amenities aboard the Pacific Surfliner, featuring comfortable reclining seats with power outlets, complimentary Wi-Fi, bike storage, and a Market Café offering a range of snacks, beverages, including California wines and local craft beers. To purchase tickets, customers can visit PacificSurfliner.com, Amtrak.com, or utilize the Amtrak mobile application.

In summary, the expansion of the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner's service represents a significant enhancement in travel options along one of the busiest passenger rail corridors in the United States, aiming to promote increased ridership and convenience for all travelers in the region.
