New Bakery Café Bread and Espresso Opens in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima, Debuting Local Delicacies

New Bakery Café: Bread and Espresso in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima

The beloved bakery café 'Bread and Espresso,' which originated in Omotesando, Tokyo, is expanding its reach with the opening of a new branch in Tenmonkan, Kagoshima. Operated by Sun Eat and backed by HIS, this café represents the seventh addition to their ambitious 'Local Bread Project' that aims to showcase unique regional offerings across Japan.

Concept and Interior Design

The name 'Tenmonkan' derives from the area's history as a site for astronomical observation. In designing the new café, there is a strong emphasis on reflecting the local culture and history. Inspired by the concept of an astronomical observatory and the beauty of the starry sky, the interior features arch-shaped designs on the walls that evoke these celestial themes. The ceiling is painted a deep navy to simulate the night sky, beautifully complemented by star-shaped lights and planet-like fixtures that create a warm, enchanting space.

The café's exterior is striking, featuring expansive windows adorned with a lattice design inspired by Kagoshima's traditional Satsuma Kiriko glasswork, making it a true representation of the city's cultural essence.

Exclusive Menu Offerings

One of the main attractions of the Tenmonkan location is its unique menu items, crafted exclusively for this branch:

  • - Shirokuma Moo: A spin on Kagoshima’s beloved sweet, 'Shirokuma,' this dish features the café’s signature 'Moo' bread—richly buttered and fluffy. Topped with cold ice cream, whipped cream, chewy mochi, vibrant fruits, and a generous drizzle of condensed milk, it reinterprets the classic Shirokuma taste, allowing patrons to indulge in a delightful combination of flavors unique to Kagoshima.

  • - Annoimo Moo: This dish showcases the vibrant purple dough mixed with luscious Anno sweet potatoes, enveloping a rich Anno paste inside. A single bite reveals the sweet, syrupy essence of Anno sweet potatoes that melts in your mouth.

  • - Brown Sugar French Toast: Highlighting Kagoshima’s deep and rich brown sugar, this dish features the 'Moo' bread soaked in a generous helping of brown sugar and pan-fried to perfection. Topped with aromatic kinako to resemble Sakurajima's mountains, and drizzled with warm brown sugar syrup, it offers a sensory delight that merges flavors and textures for a locally-inspired treat.

Owner Yoshimitsu's Vision

Yoshimitsu, the café owner, expresses his enthusiasm for 'Bread and Espresso’s' unique atmosphere and the high-quality products that the brand is renowned for. He appreciates the creativity involved in bringing local flavors to life and supports the 'one owner per prefecture' system that emphasizes regional development and connection. Yoshimitsu aims to offer memorable experiences through every aspect of the café—cuisine, drinks, and ambiance.
