JPR's Achievement at the First Japan Logistics Awards
Japan Pallet Rental Co., Ltd. (JPR), based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has received the
Encouragement Award at the inaugural
Japan Logistics Awards, organized by the Japan Logistics Association. This recognition celebrates the company's collaborative efforts in maritime modal shifts and joint transportation with its partners, including Sekikou Logistics NEXT, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, and Dr. Lululun. The award is a progressive transition from the previous Logistics Environmental Awards and the Modal Shift Excellent Business Awards, aiming to commend outstanding initiatives for sustainable logistics.
Overview of the Joint Transportation Initiative
The project recognized involves effective round transportation across maritime routes connecting Kyushu, Shikoku, and Kanto, breaking industry barriers to implement this eco-friendly solution. Sekikou Logistics NEXT manages the overall transportation process, utilizing the routes provided by Oceantrans Co., Ltd.
Transportation Route (Maritime Shipping Section)
- - Kyushu to Shikoku (Shinmoji Port to Tokushima Port): JPR (Rental Pallets)
- - Shikoku to Kanto (Tokushima Port to Tokyo Port): Kobayashi Pharmaceutical (household goods) and Dr. Lululun (face masks) mixed cargo
- - Kanto to Kyushu (Tokyo Port to Shinmoji Port): Kobayashi Pharmaceutical (household goods)
Effective Use of 14m Trailers
The initiative tackled the loading efficiency issue in transporting from Shikoku to Kanto where individual companies could not fulfill the capacity of a 20t trailer. By shifting to a mixed load using a 14m semi-trailer, they minimized costs while successfully transitioning from land to maritime transport.
Outcomes of the Implementation
The collaboration led to significant results:
- - High Load Ratio: Achieved approximately 99.4% vehicle utilization.
- - CO2 Reduction: Reduced emissions by about 29.5 tons annually (20%).
- - Driver Work Hours: Decreased annual driver working time by 843 hours (65.9%).
This shift from long-haul land transport to maritime has greatly contributed to improving the working conditions for drivers, particularly addressing issues highlighted by the 2024 problem affecting the logistics industry.
Future Developments
In light of the current logistics landscape, developing efficient transport routes and further advancing modal shifts is essential. Identifying overlaps between transportation routes for goods and supply routes for pallets enables the formation of round-trip logistics, directly linking to maintaining a sustainable logistics infrastructure. JPR aims to leverage its rental pallet supply capability and streamlined palletization to enhance collaborations and partnerships with a broader range of companies and industries.
