Experience the Diversity of Rakugo at the Asahi Earth Conference 2025

Celebrating Diversity Through Rakugo at Asahi Earth Conference 2025

Asahi Shimbun Co., led by CEO Katsushi Tsunoda, will host the "Asahi Earth Conference 2025" from October 24 (Friday). This year, one of the sub-themes is "Diversity," and to mark this occasion, a special Rakugo performance will take place on November 26 (Wednesday) at the Fukagawa Edo Museum Small Theatre in Koto City, Tokyo. The performance titled "Tsuru Ko no Kiwami - Masterpieces of Women: Shibahama and Kobakare" features the illustrious Rakugo performer Tsuru Ko, who shines a spotlight on the emotional intricacies of female characters in classic Rakugo, enriching its diversity.

In this performance, Tsuru Ko will introduce two well-known narratives: "Shibahama" and "Kobakare," which centre on the life choices of two women at pivotal moments. The story revolves around Omitu, a woman with a drunkard fishmonger husband, and Otoruko, a woman who has separated from her carpenter husband to raise her only son alone. How will these two women navigate their lives and make their choices amidst laughter and tears? This autumn night promises a deep dive into the themes of marital bonds presented from the perspective of wives, brought to life through Tsuru Ko's unique interpretation. The dual performance offers a rare chance to experience these two masterpieces, and the resonances between them will be a highlight. Whether you are a first-timer or a dedicated Rakugo fan, you're in for a delightful experience!
