McDermott Achieves Timely Completion of Kikeh Offshore Gas Lift Project in Malaysia
McDermott's Successful Completion of the Kikeh Subsea Gas Lift Project
In a significant achievement, McDermott International, Ltd. announced the successful completion of the Kikeh subsea gas lift project in East Malaysia, executed ahead of the planned schedule. This operation marks another milestone for McDermott, showcasing the company’s dedication to delivering projects safely and efficiently in the challenging offshore environment.
The project, awarded by PTTEP Sabah Oil Limited, began in the first quarter of 2024 and is located approximately 75 miles northwest of Labuan Island. It involved essential activities such as transportation, installation, and commissioning of various subsea components. McDermott's Kuala Lumpur-based team undertook this complex task, managing operations at water depths of around 1,400 meters, which underscores the firm's extensive capabilities in handling deepwater projects.
Key efforts included the replacement of an existing gas lift riser coupled with the installation of a new dynamic riser section, flowline, and two thermoplastic composite pipe jumpers. The project timeline was notably accelerated, with completion achieved in under eight months. Such adept execution was made possible through meticulous safety planning, rigorous engineering protocols, and efficient procurement strategies, enabling seamless vessel mobilization and successful finalization of the offshore scope of work.
Mahesh Swaminathan, McDermott’s Senior Vice President for Subsea and Floating Facilities, commented, "Completing the project ahead of schedule stands as testament to McDermott's capabilities in delivering safe and efficient solutions for deepwater field development projects. This project adds to our successful project execution track record and highlights our commitment to operational excellence."
The Kikeh field marks an essential segment of deepwater oil and gas operations in Malaysia, having been established in 2009 as one of the country’s largest offshore developments at that time. The upgrades implemented by McDermott are vital for sustaining gas delivery to the subsea production system linked to the Kikeh floating production storage and offloading vessel.
With its Kuala Lumpur office acting as a strategic hub for Subsea and Floating Facilities operations, McDermott’s presence in Malaysia has been a driving force behind the company’s success in executing complex projects not just domestically but also on a global scale. The engineering excellence displayed by this office, now home to over 1,000 skilled employees, is pivotal to the continued success story of McDermott in the energy sector.
As a leading provider of engineering and construction solutions, McDermott operates in over 54 countries, employing more than 30,000 people worldwide. Its technology-focused approach helps to convert energy resources responsibly and sustainably into the products necessary for a growing global economy.
In summary, the fast-track completion of the Kikeh subsea gas lift project not only enhances McDermott’s operational portfolio but also further establishes the company’s reputation as a leader in safety, efficiency, and deepwater project management, paving the way for future endeavors in offshore energy development.
