Revitalization Project: MUJI and UR Collaborate with Osaka University for New Community Spaces

MUJI×UR Revitalization Project Unveiled in Hirakata, Osaka

The collaborative revitalization initiative between MUJI HOUSE and UR Urban Revitalization Agency has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the renovation work at Nakamiya Danchi No. 3, in Hirakata City, Osaka. This project, known as the "MUJI×UR Danchi Comprehensive Renovation Project", also incorporated valuable insights and creative designs from students of Osaka Electro-Communication University.

Project Overview

In a bid to repurpose and enhance the communal areas of old apartment complexes, this landmark project encouraged partnerships between local residents, MUJI HOUSE, and UR Urban Revitalization Agency. The students from Osaka University were tasked with several roles, including examining the usage of community spaces and proposing design frameworks, as well as engaging in hands-on DIY processes for the renovation.

Central to this initiative was the repurposing of a previously administrative service office, now creatively dubbed “Kyukansa” after refurbishment. The student-led team meticulously crafted design proposals that reflected the community’s aspirations, resulting in practical and aesthetically pleasing enhancements.

Following a series of collaborative sessions with design experts from MUJI HOUSE, the students translated their innovative concepts into tangible installations, showcasing their DIY craftsmanship by constructing items like wall-mounted bookshelves in the university's facilities, later installing them at the site.
