Pennsylvania American Water Secures Over $64 Million for Water Infrastructure Upgrades

One of the major projects is focused on Dormont Borough in Allegheny County, which will see the replacement of approximately 575 lead and galvanized lead-impacted water service lines. The funding for this initiative includes a PENNVEST grant of $2,694,306 along with a loan of $6,205,694 featuring a low interest rate of 1.00% for a period of 25.25 years. The removal of these lead components is pivotal in improving water quality for local residents, aligning with ongoing state initiatives to eliminate lead service lines.

Pennsylvania State Senator Wayne Fontana expressed pride in advocating for the funding, emphasizing that clean water infrastructure remains a priority. Addressing PFAS Contamination in Cumberland County

In Cumberland County, another key project involves the construction of a new PFAS treatment system at the Silver Spring Water Treatment Plant, which serves 12 municipalities. This project has been allocated a PENNVEST grant of $2,447,879 and a substantial loan of $27,758,121, with the loan’s interest rates beginning at 1.743% for the first five years. This new system, featuring granular activated carbon filter vessels, is designed to help meet future EPA PFAS regulations, ensuring the community has access to safe drinking water.

State Representative Thomas Kutz remarked on the importance of this funding, highlighting the significant impact on approximately 85,000 residents who rely on the Silver Spring Water Treatment Plant.

New Water Treatment Plant in Susquehanna County

Further investments are also being made for the Susquehanna Water Treatment Plant in Harmony Township, where a $25 million PENNVEST loan will fund the construction of a new facility. This upgrade addresses concerns related to the existing plant, which has faced ongoing maintenance issues and structural integrity concerns. The loan, offered at 1.00% interest for the first five years, aims to replace aging infrastructure and improve water quality for more than 4,200 customers.
