Circle K Opens Its First European EV-Only Supermarket in Gothenburg

Circle K's New EV-Only Supermarket in Gothenburg: A Game Changer

On May 23, 2025, Circle K marked a significant milestone in the expansion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in Europe by opening its first charging-only supermarket in Gårda, part of Gothenburg, Sweden. This innovative facility aims to provide a comprehensive solution for EV users by combining high-speed charging capabilities with a convenient retail experience.

With a strategic location near the center of Gothenburg, Circle K's new site boasts ten ultra-fast 400-kW charging stations designed to recharge vehicles from 0 to 80% in just about 15 minutes. This not only addresses the urgent need for modern charging stations but also aligns with the growing demand for sustainable transportation options. The supermarket measures 100 square meters and offers a diverse selection of food and beverages, including freshly prepared pizza, kebabs, and award-winning sausages, ensuring that customers have a pleasant stopping point.

Hans-Olav Høidahl, Executive Vice President of European Operations and Global eMobility at Circle K, expressed the importance of this new location by emphasizing its role in attracting EV users. The establishment is designed to provide a seamless blend of charging and shopping experiences. Høidahl stated, “Our new site in Gårda is an important step in attracting customers with electric vehicles by offering them simple and convenient charging with a complete retail experience.”

Høidahl further explained that the facility boasts a welcoming atmosphere, equipped with Wi-Fi and ample seating areas, making it a safe and comfortable stop for travelers. Gårda is conveniently located along the heavily trafficked Swedish E6 motorway, which sees over 100,000 vehicles daily and supports the businesses of more than 10,000 people nearby. This key positioning ensures that Circle K can serve a significant portion of the traveling public with EVs.

The Gårda supermarket follows the introduction of Circle K's largest EV charging center in Järna, Sweden, and indicates the company's ongoing commitment to bolstering the electric vehicle ecosystem across Europe. With over 3,000 Circle K-branded charging stations currently in operation across the continent, the network is rapidly expanding to meet the increasing needs of EV users.

Globally, Circle K operates nearly 17,000 locations and is uniquely positioned to support the transition toward electrified mobility. They are committed to enhancing convenience for customers by providing accessible charging options, no matter where they travel.

In addition to the charging services, the Gårda site aims to introduce a new sense of community into the area by offering a gathering place for travelers and locals alike. The establishment not only fulfills a practical need for EV charging but also brings new energy and comfort to the neighborhood, facilitating more sustainable travel practices.

Adding to the excitement, the modern facility represents a clear leap forward in Circle K's goal to become the go-to fast-charging destination for EV users throughout Europe. As demand for electric vehicles grows, this new supermarket demonstrates Circle K's commitment to evolving with the changing landscape of transportation, ensuring a greener future for all.

Circle K's innovative approach at the Gårda location serves as a model for future EV charging facilities, integrating convenience, comfort, and sustainability within the context of everyday travel. This is just the beginning of a significant shift in how we view our road trips and electric vehicle usage.
