Clarivate's Leading Trademark Portfolios Report
On May 15, 2025, in London, Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT) released its latest report titled "Trademark Application Trends 2025," which offers a comprehensive analysis of trademark application activities in ten major regions worldwide. The report highlights the largest domestic and foreign trademark portfolios in regions including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, France, Germany, India, mainland China, Japan, and Australia. It also identifies the agents managing the largest trademark portfolios.
According to SAEGIS data, mainland China leads the world in trademark applications, with a staggering 6.76 million filings in 2024. Despite a decline in activity over the past three years, China has maintained its top position. The United States ranks second with 566,938 applications, while India follows closely with over 537,000 applications in 2024, marking an impressive annual growth rate of 10% over the past decade.
Gordon Samson, President of Clarivate's Intellectual Property division, emphasized the complex landscape of both new and established brand markets. He stated, "As the market becomes increasingly intricate, agents must be acutely aware of the subtle economic interactions between local macro trends and key trademark activity hubs. By incorporating insights from our report into their trademark and business strategies, brand owners can build more informed intellectual property management approaches. This not only mitigates risks related to trademark infringement but also enables them to seize new opportunities."
Key Findings from 2024 Trademark Application Data
The report also reveals several noteworthy insights based on the trademark application data for 2024:
1.
Top Brands Consistently Ranked: Seven major brands continue to rank among the top 20 portfolio holders. Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Apple, L'Oréal, Novartis, LG Electronics, and Unilever emerged as the predominant portfolio owners across at least seven of the ten analyzed registration agencies.

Regions Facing Decline: Three regions—France, mainland China, and Japan—have encountered persistent decreases in trademark applications over the past three years. In all these regions, the number of applications in 2024 is reported to be the lowest since 2017.

China's Dominance in Trademark Applications: Despite the decline in some areas, mainland China continues to assert its supremacy in global trademark applications, underscoring the nation’s economic growth and the expansion of its worldwide brand presence.
4.
Australia's Recovery: Trademark applications in Australia have rebounded to levels seen in 2021, largely driven by a 24% increase in filings from foreign-based brand owners in 2024.
