Leadership Transformation at Ramaco Resources: New Roles and Direction

Leadership Transformation at Ramaco Resources

On March 18, 2025, Ramaco Resources, Inc., publicly known as Ramaco, proudly declared important changes within its executive leadership and Board of Directors. This strategic move is expected to guide the company toward a new phase of growth and opportunity.

A New Direction for the Legal Department

E. Forrest Jones, Jr., a prominent figure in the minerals and coal law sector, will take on the role of General Counsel on May 1, 2025. Jones, who has been part of Ramaco's Board since January 2021, will resign from his directorial position to embrace his new full-time commitment. As a respected legal advisor with decades of experience, he has been pivotal in Ramaco’s successes, particularly during times of considerable growth.

Randall W. Atkins, the company's Chairman and CEO, expressed high regard for Jones's contributions, emphasizing his strategic insights and leadership during crucial board discussions. Jones, who has significant experience in safety and environmental standards, will leverage his skills to enhance legal operations within the company. His prior roles have made him one of the leading counsels in the coal industry, having dealt with various corporate aspects.

Strengthening the Board with New Insights

Alongside Jones's elevation, Evan H. Jenkins has also been named as Vice-Chairman of the Board. Jenkins, who has already been serving as the General Counsel and Secretary since February 2024, has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills during his tenure. His background as a state and federal legislator, combined with his experience as a Chief Justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court, adds a unique dimension to his role on the Board.

According to Atkins, Jenkins's analytical capabilities and broad understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks will guide the Board through future challenges and opportunities. Despite stepping down from the General Counsel position as Jones steps in, Jenkins will continue to play a pivotal role as Secretary.

The current composition of the Board remains unchanged, with five independent directors and four non-independent directors, ensuring a balance of perspectives and experiences.

Profiles of the New Leaders

E. Forrest Jones, Jr., aged 74, brings a wealth of knowledge from his long-standing career in the legal landscape. He established Jones Associates, a law firm specializing in corporate and business legal matters, where he has operated for over three decades. Jones holds degrees from the University of Virginia and West Virginia University, and his credentials allow him to practice law across various courts in West Virginia and federal jurisdictions.

Evan H. Jenkins, aged 64, joined Ramaco in 2024. He has a remarkable history in public service, including notable roles as a U.S. Congressman and Chief Justice. Jenkins’s legal acumen and ties to the business community will undoubtedly prove advantageous in navigating the complexities of corporate governance and regulations. With a degree in business administration and a law degree from Cumberland School of Law, he is well-equipped for his dual roles.

Ramaco’s Vision Ahead

Ramaco Resources operates in West Virginia and Virginia, focusing on low-cost metallurgical coal production and rare earth mineral exploration in Wyoming. The company is recognized for its innovative approaches, evidenced by recent discoveries of rare earth deposits and ongoing collaborations in carbon research and development. The leadership changes aim not only at enhancing legal and regulatory navigations but also at capitalizing on the company’s growth potential in the energy sector.

With these executive transitions, Ramaco is positioned to tackle the evolving landscape of the mining and minerals industry with renewed vigor and insight. The experience and influence of Jones and Jenkins promise to shape the company’s future endeavors positively. As Ramaco Resources continues to expand its operations, the strategic input from its newly positioned leaders will be crucial in fostering sustainability and innovation in their business practices.
