Urban Vineyard Initiative: Transforming Bunkyo into a Hub of Wine Culture

The Bunkyo Urban Vineyard Initiative

The Bunkyo Urban Vineyard Initiative, spearheaded by the Toyo Gakuen University, aims to set a new precedent in urban agriculture and wine production. This groundbreaking project, under the guidance of associate professor Takuya Nomura from the School of Modern Management, will see wine grapes cultivated on the rooftop of the university's Hongo campus. Such an endeavor is rare in Japan and signifies a bold step toward integrating agricultural practices with urban lifestyles and culinary culture.

Objectives of the Initiative

This initiative not only embraces sustainability but also encourages educational engagement with the community. The partnership with the Miyagi-based winery, Fattoria AL FIORE, will provide the necessary grape varieties suitable for the urban environment and will explore optimal growing conditions for these crops. This hands-on project entrenches itself in both educational and local community enhancement, ensuring that students learn practical applications of modern business theories while contributing positively to society.

Since 2004, the project has leveraged the renewed green rooftop space of the campus to encourage agricultural branding and product development, starting with herbs like rosemary, which were transformed into aromatic candles that achieved great success in local markets. Their upcoming participation in the Bunkyo Expo 2025 symbolizes the commercial potential of their urban agricultural models and signifies their endeavor to bring urban farming into the limelight.
