Valuence Holdings Updates Resale Impact Calculation Method to Visualize Environmental Contributions

Valuence Holdings, based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, has announced an update to its calculation method for the Resale Impact, a key indicator that demonstrates environmental contributions through brand resale. As discussions around quantifying environmental contributions, particularly in the resale sector, continue to evolve both domestically and internationally, the lack of standardized calculation methodologies has become apparent. This gap is particularly evident in industries dealing with luxury goods such as watches, jewelry, and bags, which are not only of high quality and durability but also present significant environmental value through their resale. Recognizing this, Valuence has been quantifying and disclosing its environmental contributions since 2021 while promoting sustainable practices through its reuse business.

What is Resale Impact?

Valuence defines Resale Impact as a numerical representation of the environmental value generated by brand resale, which promotes the circulation of products, maximizing their usable lifespan rather than allowing them to reach premature disposal. The continuous movement of luxury items through resale helps mitigate environmental burdens by extending the lifecycle of these products.

Calculation Method

The updated calculation method assesses the impact of product reselling and lifecycle extension on reducing environmental burdens associated with resource extraction and manufacturing. By utilizing actual data from its transactions, including product weights and shipping records whenever possible, Valuence aims for accurate and realistic data representation. Notably, for key categories such as watches, jewelry, and bags, the average lifespan is determined through customer surveys conducted by their partner service, ‘Nanboya,’ with over 3,900 valid responses.

The methodology for this calculation has been developed by ZEROK, a consultancy specializing in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and further validated by a peer review conducted by Professor Ichiro Daigo from the Advanced Industrial Science and Technology Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.

Scope of Calculation

The components considered in this calculation include:
  • - Service: Brand resale services
  • - Product categories: Watches, jewelry, bags, cases, small goods, apparel, and shoes.

Resale Impact for the 2025 Fiscal Year

For items resold through ALLU, STAR BUYERS AUCTION, and ALLU AUCTION, the calculated results are impressive:
  • - GHG emission reduction contribution: 7,486 t-CO2e
  • - Water usage reduction contribution: 8,843 m³

To put this into perspective, the 7,486 t-CO2e reduction is approximately the amount of CO₂ absorbed by 850,000 cedar trees in one year (calculating based on an average absorption rate of around 8.8 kg of CO₂ per tree annually).

Transition to ALLU

Valuence aims to progressively switch to this updated calculation method for displaying Resale Impact on product tags across its pre-owned brand shop, ALLU, both online and in physical stores.

Valuence Holdings is committed to visualizing the environmental value of reuse and making appropriate disclosures to accelerate the transition to a circular economy, contributing to a more sustainable society.
