Vishal Garg Outlines Ambitious 90-Day Strategy for Better Home & Finance
In a bold move to rejuvenate Better Home & Finance, Founder Vishal Garg unveiled a robust 90-day strategy aimed at restoring profitable growth and increasing shareholder value. As part of this plan, Garg targets a substantial quarterly funded-loan volume of $2 billion, with plans to bolster monthly revenue growth by $7 million, while reducing monthly cash burn from about $4 million to zero.
Garg emphasized the innovative capabilities of Better's Tinman technology platform, which will be enhanced using AI to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. He stated, "Despite facing a challenging market where many mortgage companies have struggled, Better has managed to grow its revenue significantly, and we aim to build on that momentum."
The groundwork of Garg's strategy involves a focus on operational excellence, exemplified through key initiatives that include launching the CK HELOC via an API-driven approach, and securing partnerships to drive funded-loan growth. Improving operational efficiency is central to the plan, which includes increasing the daily talk time of loan officers from an average of 2.1 to a targeted 4 hours. By utilizing AI-driven call routing, there is a clear goal to boost conversion rates by at least 50%.
Moreover, the plan outlines an ambitious target to improve Better's Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) lock-to-fund rate from around 45% to an industry-standard 60%, addressing consumer communications and incentives to tackle processing delays. Garg said, "Our methodology is about ensuring that our teams concentrate on tasks that require human intelligence, while leveraging AI to streamline processes where possible."
Financially, the plan includes tactical cost-cutting measures designed to save up to $2 million monthly across several operational areas. This includes initiatives such as aligning commission structures on AI-assisted conversions, which will allow loan officers to devote more time to complex cases that necessitate personal interaction.
The governance aspect of Garg’s strategy has also drawn attention. With a focus on operational execution, he proposes replacing several board members to prioritize experience in scaling businesses through effective operations, aligning with the company's growth ambitions. This proposed board will also be incentivized to align their interests with shareholders by investing in Better's stock.
Additionally, Garg is engaging a search firm to find a permanent CEO with expertise in fintech, credit, and AI, aiming to complete this process within 120 days. Furthermore, the plan envisages the sale of Better's UK bank, a move designed to recapitalize the business and fund a $30 million share repurchase, starting with an immediate authorization of up to $10 million.
Garg concluded that these collective efforts, alongside a concerted focus on innovation and operational improvement, will enable Better to unleash its full potential and significantly enhance its market valuation in comparison to similar AI-native businesses. In essence, the 90-day plan is not just about recovery; it’s about laying a foundation for sustainable growth through strategic transformation.
