Celebrating 100 Years: A Special Exhibit at Rissho University Library

A Century of Knowledge: Rissho University Library's Special Exhibition

As Rissho University Library approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, it prepares to honor this milestone with a unique exhibition titled "Yamazaki Chusen and Ukiyo-e: Reflecting on the 100-Year-Old Library Opening Celebrations." This exhibition seeks to shed light on the rich history of the library while showcasing the remarkable collection of Ukiyo-e prints donated by the descendants of Yamazaki Chusen.

The Legacy of Yamazaki Chusen

Yamazaki Chusen, a prominent figure born in 1880, was not just a priest of the Nichiren sect; he was also a poet and a scholar of classical Japanese literature. Rising to the rank of Sojo, he served as a professor at Rissho University, where he influenced many students and contributed significantly to the academic community.

As a poet, Chusen was notably the chief editor of the literary magazine "Chugaku Bundan" and founded the Tanka society "Kagunomi-sha." His passion for collecting ancient texts and Ukiyo-e art also defined his legacy, making him an important figure in the preservation of Japanese cultural heritage.

In 1926, exactly 100 years ago, Yamazaki Chusen played a pivotal role in the library's inaugural exhibition. He generously contributed his collection to commemorate the opening, ensuring that the library's debut was filled with cultural significance.

A Nostalgic Return

Thanks to the kind generosity of his descendants, the Ukiyo-e collection has been made available for public display once again in honor of the library's centenary. This special exhibit not only showcases beautiful artworks but also serves as a poignant reminder of the library's historical journey and the theme of "knowledge transfer" that binds the past with the present.

The exhibition aims to engage visitors both visually and intellectually, encouraging them to reflect on the importance of preserving knowledge and culture over the decades. Attendees will be able to witness firsthand the artistic pieces that once graced the library a century ago, allowing for a deeper appreciation of history and legacy.
