Experience the Reimagining of a Thousand-Year Art
YAMATO Lab. invites you to delve into the intricate and vibrant world of
shibori dyeing, a time-honored craft that encapsulates Japan's rich textile heritage. From
April 29 to
May 6, 2026, the
YAMATO Lab. TOKYO in Kagurazaka will host a special exhibition titled
“Shibori Dyeing - The Memory of a Thousand Years Released Through the Lines of Light.”
This exhibition showcases the artistry of
shibori, a dyeing technique that has been refined over centuries, and highlights the efforts of artisans from the
Arimatsu and Narumi region of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Collaborating with Zhongmu Co., Ltd., YAMATO Lab. brings to light the historical context of shibori, the intricate processes involved, and the personal stories of the artisans behind this beautiful craft.
The Beauty of Handcrafted Artistry
At the heart of shibori dyeing lies a unique process of tying, dyeing, and untying fabric — resulting in one-of-a-kind creations that differ in their expressions. Each piece embodies the meticulous touch of the artisan, local knowledge, and the passage of time, allowing the subtle variations of handwork to accompany wearers on their personal journeys.
Visitors are encouraged to engage with the seasonal sensations and cherish the joys of wearing handmade creations. The exhibition not only celebrates the value of human craftsmanship but also connects traditional techniques with modern sensibilities.
A Unique Opportunity: The First Shibori Yukata Order Event
In conjunction with the exhibition, YAMATO Lab. will conduct its inaugural
Shibori Yukata Order Event on the first floor of the gallery. This exclusive opportunity allows attendees to explore a curated selection of
yukata from YAMATO’s diverse brands, including
Kimono Yamato,
KIMONO ARCH,
Y. & SONS, and
THE YARD. This event will feature approximately 40 carefully chosen items, ranging from traditional designs to contemporary styles, enabling participants to select their own personalized pieces.
For those who wish to have their chosen fabric tailored, the finished yukata will be delivered to their homes by mid-June. In addition to pre-order options, guests will have the chance to purchase shibori yukata and accessories directly from the event.
Understanding Shibori Dyeing
Shibori dyeing is a technique that has been practiced globally for centuries. By the Nara period, sophisticated dyeing methods had already been introduced to Japan from China. Among the historical artifacts preserved in the Shosoin repository of Todai-ji, there are notable examples of
shibori textiles. The techniques involve various binding methods, stitching, and folding to create vibrant patterns, with the Arimatsu Narumi area reportedly having over 100 types of binding methods, with around 70 still in practice today.
The first International Shibori Conference was held in Nagoya in 1992, attended by representatives from 20 different countries, highlighting the global appreciation for this traditional craft and efforts to perpetuate its legacy.
