Improving Military Readiness: Addressing Bone-Stress Injuries
A collaborative research team from Rosalind Franklin University (RFU) and Old Dominion University recently secured a substantial grant of $3,419,895 to tackle a pressing concern in military training: bone-stress injuries among recruits. These injuries, which occur during intensive physical training, pose a significant challenge and have substantial economic implications, costing the military approximately $100 million annually, not including the additional costs of reduced readiness.
Beginning on September 1, 2026, with funding from the U.S. Department of War's Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP), this initiative aims to enhance the health and performance of military personnel. Current estimates suggest that 1% to 8% of recruits will experience stress fractures, necessitating numerous clinical visits and costly diagnostic procedures like MRIs and bone scans. Therefore, there is a compelling need for improved early diagnosis and risk assessment.
Project Objective: Early Detection and Prevention
Led by Dr. Shawn D. Flanagan, an expert at RFU’s Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR), alongside Dr. Chris Connaboy from Old Dominion University, the research will explore non-invasive urinary biomarkers. Their promising project, titled "Urinary Proteomic Biomarkers of Adaptive Bone Formation and Stress Injuries in Military Recruits," aims to develop reliable biomarkers that can detect stress injuries before they worsen. By doing so, the researchers hope to help prevent interruptions in training and optimize rehabilitation processes.
The objective of their research is clear: to create a clinically actionable panel of biomarker tests that reduces the dependency on extensive imaging, shortens diagnosis times, and identifies recruits at heightened risk of stress fractures. This development could prove vital in mitigating injuries and enhancing the overall readiness of military forces.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration for Enhanced Outcomes
The research team combines expertise from numerous fields, including proteomics, musculoskeletal physiology, and military health, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach. They plan to utilize advanced label-free quantitation techniques in their analysis, focusing on longitudinal studies with military recruit cohorts. Additionally, gender-specific analyses will be part of the research endeavor to foster applicability across diverse populations.
Dr. Flanagan noted, "Bone stress injuries are a major barrier to military preparedness. We aim to combine cutting-edge proteomic methods with our access to large military cohorts to create a biomarker panel that enhances operational performance while safeguarding the health of recruits."
The recognition from PRMRP further solidifies RFU's dedication to translational research that has real-life implications for both military and civilian populations. Janice Urban, the interim executive vice president of research at RFU, emphasized the importance of fostering collaborations across various disciplines to improve health and performance.
