Ryuichiro Ishimoto: A Rising Star of Okayama University
On September 17, 2025, Ryuichiro Ishimoto, a third-year student from the Faculty of Education at Okayama University, was honored with the Okayama University Student Sports Award (International Sports Award). This achievement is in recognition of his selection as a member of the men's 400m hurdles team representing Japan at the upcoming 25th Summer Deaflympics, scheduled to take place from November 15 to 26, 2025, at the Komazawa Olympic Park Sports Complex.
During his visit to the university's president, Yasuyuki Nasu, and the executive board member, Kan Suga, Ishimoto expressed his determination and enthusiasm for the competition. Accompanied by Yuichi Hara, his coach and expert in hurdles, he shared insights about his training progress. “I managed to update my personal best during the recent competition in Kurashiki,” he stated. “I aim to surpass my coach, Mr. Hara, at the Deaflympics.” This ambition showcases not only his competitive spirit but also the supportive relationship that he shares with his coach, who expressed confidence in Ishimoto's potential by saying, “I believe you will exceed my achievements.”
As a dedicated athlete, Ishimoto is actively seeking to improve his technical skills in the hurdles event. When asked by Suga if the hurdles are technically challenging, Ishimoto responded with a light-hearted acknowledgment, revealing, “I still lack the necessary skills for hurdling. After competing in the Shikoku-Chugoku Intercollegiate Championships and the individual events, Mr. Hara told me there was a lot to work on.” This candid moment highlighted his willingness to learn and grow as an athlete.
Ishimoto’s preparation for the Deaflympics extends beyond hurdles. In response to a question about his training methods from President Nasu, he explained that he collaborates with friends who belong to the university's weight training team and have experience competing at the world level. By sharing training techniques, tips on form, and other insights with them, he continuously seeks to refine his technique and conditioning.
Amidst the rigors of training and competition, Ishimoto expresses that he faces a mix of excitement and nervousness. With the world stage set for his debut, he remains focused and determined, embodying the spirit of a true athlete. We all look forward to witnessing Ishimoto’s journey at the Deaflympics and cheering for his success on an international platform.
