About the Whisky Culture Institute
Established in March 2001, the Whisky Culture Institute has been dedicated to the dissemination of whisky culture, led by whisky critic Mamoru Tsuchiya. The organization has conducted extensive research into both domestic and international whisky and drinking cultures, gathering and disseminating information. Collaborating with industry professionals, it works on initiatives to educate and foster whisky enthusiasts.

Whisky Galore and organizing whisky festivals, the Institute has developed qualification programs like the Whisky Connoisseur certification exam and the Whisky Certification test. Profile of President Mamoru Tsuchiya
Born in 1954 in Sado, Niigata Prefecture, Tsuchiya graduated from the Faculty of Literature at Gakushuin University. After starting his career as a magazine journalist, he moved to the UK in 1987. It was during this time that he first encountered single malt Scotch and became deeply fascinated by it. Upon returning to Japan, he became a whisky critic and was recognized in 1998 as one of the world's five leading whisky writers by Highland Distillers.
Tsuchiya consulted on whisky themes for the NHK morning drama
Massan, which aired from September 2014 to March 2015. He is a prolific author, having written numerous books including
The Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch,
The Complete Guide to Blended Whisky, and more. He is also the editor-in-chief of the bimonthly
Whisky Galore magazine and serves as the Chairperson for the Japanese Whisky Day Committee and the representative director of the newly established Japan Whisky Culture Promotion Association (JWPC) as of July 2024.
