Valmet's Upcoming Change Negotiations
Valmet Oyj, a global technology leader in the process industry, is set to commence change negotiations on November 10, 2025, concerning temporary layoffs within the Packaging and Paper business area and the Global Supply unit in Finland. This decision follows previously implemented measures aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and adapting to evolving market conditions.
The negotiations, mandated by the Finnish Co-operation Act, will impact roughly 950 employees across various facilities, predominantly situated in Jyväskylä, Tikkurila (Vantaa), and Raisio. Employees in the Packaging and Paper Machines business unit and the machine workshop and foundry of the PP Manufacturing unit will be involved in these discussions. The intent of these negotiations is to assess and specify the extent and timing of the layoffs, with plans to execute them in the first half of 2026.
This strategic initiative continues Valmet’s ongoing efforts to improve its cost framework and operational capacity within the Packaging and Paper segment, which is integral to its Biomaterial Solutions and Services division. The company has previously engaged in similar activities within the past few years to align more closely with the changing demands of the market.
Valmet’s Packaging and Paper division focuses on the development and delivery of advanced board and paper production lines and technologies globally. By optimizing procurement, logistics, and manufacturing operations, the Global Supply unit seeks to strengthen the organization’s foundation in providing cutting-edge solutions to its clientele.
As a company, Valmet employs around 19,000 individuals globally, with approximately 6,000 based in Finland. This adjustment acknowledges the need for continuous improvement despite the challenges posed by fluctuating market dynamics.
Petri Paukkunen, Vice President of the Packaging and Paper Machines unit, stated the importance of these negotiations in maintaining Valmet’s competitive edge. He emphasized the company’s commitment to its workforce as it navigates these temporary layoffs, aiming for a swift restoration of normal operations once market conditions stabilize.
Valmet’s vision remains to transform industries towards a regenerative future by leveraging over 225 years of industrial expertise and a skilled workforce. Its commitment to innovation, automation, and flow control solutions continues to define its position as a competitive player in the global technology landscape.
With net sales projected at around EUR 5.4 billion in 2024, Valmet's strategic realignment through these negotiations signifies a crucial move in sustaining its growth trajectory. Stakeholders are encouraged to remain updated on the proceedings and their outcomes, which will be communicated through official Valmet channels.
