CIEE Partners with America250 to Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) has announced its partnership with America250, an initiative charged by Congress to lead the celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This collaboration aims to honor America's values of democracy, opportunity, and civic participation, especially during this historic milestone in 2026.
Since its inception in 1947, CIEE has strived to enhance global understanding through people-to-people exchanges. Over the last eight decades, the organization has played a vital role in fostering mutual respect and understanding between the United States and other nations. Through various programs, CIEE has not only supported American students studying and working abroad but has also welcomed international participants to engage in U.S. cultural exchanges, thus embodying the core American principles it intends to celebrate.
The year 2026 will be marked by an emphasis on national reflection and civic engagement, featuring a variety of events and projects as part of the America250 initiative. CIEE plans to highlight these activities, particularly focusing on the America Gives initiative, which calls upon organizations to amplify their commitment to volunteerism and community impact. This program coincides with CIEE's own Community Impact Initiative, which adds meaningful community service components to its study abroad and intercultural exchange programs.
James P. Pellow, Ed.D., President and CEO of CIEE, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to collaborate with America250 to honor America and its tradition of serving others, particularly those in need. Together, we aim to harness the enthusiasm of youth to effect positive change in our communities and beyond."
Furthermore, Jen Condon, Executive Vice President at America250, emphasized the importance of this anniversary as a moment to contemplate shared values that unify Americans while strengthening international ties. She noted, "CIEE's commitment to educational exchange mirrors the spirit of civic engagement essential to this historic milestone, positioning us well to inspire collective participation throughout the Semiquincentennial."
CIEE will also create avenues to explore the diverse meanings of America through the stories and perspectives of international students visiting the U.S. and American students studying abroad. These reflections will be compiled as part of the America250 celebrations and showcased on the CIEE website, further promoting cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.
With a rich history of over 1.5 million student exchanges across more than 140 countries, CIEE remains dedicated to molding a future generation that possesses the intercultural competencies necessary for success in a highly interconnected world. As the country prepares for the upcoming anniversary, CIEE stands ready to contribute to the narrative of American resilience, democracy, and service through its long-standing initiatives.
