With the increasing convenience of language, it paradoxically seems harder for many to articulate their true emotions. In an era dominated by AI-generated content, the intrinsic human capacity to feel and convey emotions through genuine language is gaining renewed significance.

This engaging event will be hosted by Takako Ueno, a prominent Haiku poet and the President of the Japan Haiku Association, established in Setagaya, Tokyo. Ueno has been an advocate for enjoying language through Haiku for over 22 years. The event not only marks the anniversary of Haiku Day but also celebrates the 22nd anniversary of the “Chatty HAIKU Gathering” and the third anniversary of the Japan Haiku Association.

The Japanese language features approximately 5,000 to 6,000 seasonal words, or kigo, that beautifully represent the essence of nature's transitions and human emotions. Terms such as harugasumi (spring haze), hanagumori (flower clouds), and mushishigure (insect rain) showcase a cultural sensitivity to fleeting moments. This comprehensive lexicon illustrates not just an abundance of words but a historical relationship with the natural world, where each nuance is acknowledged and given a name.

Haiku, epitomized by just 17 syllables, stands as one of the shortest forms of poetry worldwide. This brevity is key to its charm; it challenges writers to make conscious decisions about what to include or exclude, pushing them to reflect deeply on their word choices. The limitations of 17 syllables invigorate creativity, prompting profound exploration of thoughts and emotions.

According to Takako Ueno, “This is Haiku!”—expressing that poetry can flourish beyond the rigid structures, inviting a playful approach to language. She founded the Chatty HAIKU Gathering in 2004, motivated by the perception that Haiku should feel accessible and enjoyable, rather than cumbersome.

Her motto emphasizes that one does not need to adhere strictly to seasonal words or the 5-7-5 syllable structure to create impactful poetry. The essence lies in articulating one’s feelings.

- Advance registration: 10,000 yen
- At the door: 11,000 yen

The deadline for Haiku submissions ended on July 19, with over 1,400 entries received. The awards ceremony during the event will honor the best contributions.
