METLEN Signs Landmark Gallium Supply Agreement
In a monumental step for Europe's critical resources strategy, METLEN announced on July 29, 2026, the establishment of a long-term commercial agreement with a major American technology company. This agreement involves the purchase of approximately 25% of the future annual gallium production from METLEN's planned plant in Greece. The specifics of the contract remain confidential, yet it marks a historic milestone in securing reliable gallium supplies, a material essential for emerging technologies.
The Significance of Gallium
Gallium plays a crucial role in various high-tech industries, including artificial intelligence, renewable energy infrastructures, telecommunications, and defense solutions. Currently, global gallium production is heavily concentrated in a few countries, making the establishment of alternative and dependable supply sources a strategic imperative for industrialized economies.
METLEN's initiative to become the first European company to create an integrated gallium production system not only positions Greece but also the European Union at the forefront of a new strategic industrial value chain. This move comes after years of dedicated research and innovation from METLEN's internal R&D teams, particularly those based in the historic Aluminium of Greece site in collaboration with the newly established ‘Critical and Rare Metals’ sub-sector within M Metals.
Comments from METLEN Leadership
Evangelos Mytilineos, the Executive Chairman of METLEN, expressed pride in the company's breakthrough for both Greece and Europe. He emphasized the significance of their gallium production efforts, stating that it marks the first instance where one of METLEN's metallurgical products has attracted such attention from leading global industrial economies. Mytilineos highlighted the trust that global leaders in technology now place in METLEN’s products, noting that these materials have undergone comprehensive qualification testing.
The European Commission has recognized METLEN's gallium production project as strategic under the Critical Raw Materials Act, further underscored by the European Investment Bank's endorsement and funding approval as part of the REPowerEU initiative.
