Celebrating 30 Years of Horror with the School Ghost Stories Series Blu-ray Release

A Celebration of Horror: 30 Years of School Ghost Stories

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved horror film series, School Ghost Stories, which took Japanese cinema by storm during the 1990s. The first installment of the series debuted in 1995, and to commemorate this milestone, four iconic films will be released on Blu-ray on July 16, 2023.

The celebration kicked off with a special screening event and live talk session held on July 6 at HUMAX Cinemas in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Key figures from the original film, including lead actor Hiroshi Nomura, director Hidenori Hirayama, and screenwriter Sadoko Okudera, were present to share their experiences and engage with fans.

Nostalgia and Reflection

During the event, Hiroshi Nomura reflected on the significance of the film, saying, "Hearing that it's been 30 years made me nostalgic. Watching the film again reminds me of how beautifully it was made, and I recognized the strength of film in preserving memories."

Director Hirayama echoed these sentiments: "Seeing the film today felt surreal, almost like it was the premiere again. As a filmmaker, opportunities to watch your work on the big screen are rare. Revisiting this film now is enlightening and humbling."

Okudera shared her gratitude, emphasizing, "It's wonderful that a film from 30 years ago has been restored on Blu-ray and enjoyed by such a large audience today."

Audience Responses and Film Appeal

As part of the discussion, the panel addressed why School Ghost Stories continues to captivate audiences, especially the fans now in their 30s and 40s who watched the film during their childhood. Nomura expressed, "I meet many fans who share how they grew up with this film. I am not sure what exactly draws them to it, but I think it presents a relatable character—one who isn’t a typical teacher but rather an ‘everyman’ caught up in extraordinary circumstances."

Director Hirayama noted that the concept of monsters in the series departs from traditional horror narratives, presenting them more like friends than foes. He believes the balance between fear and fun included in the stories keeps fans coming back.

Okudera agreed, referring to the movie’s thematic park-like feel where audiences can explore the layers of the story.

Casting Young Talent

The casting process for the children in the films also bears an interesting tale. Hirayama recalled holding auditions for about 700 children; he and his team sought naturalness over formality, dismissing overly polite children early on as potential actors.

The interplay between the young actors’ improvisation and the directors' guidance was crucial in capturing the genuine, raw emotions in the film. Hirayama remarked, "Putting the camera on during the auditions helped us observe the kids’ true selves, breaking the tension that often made them too rigid."

The Characters We Cherish

Discussing their preferred ghosts from the series, Nomura raised Teketeke, while Hirayama fondly remembers Hanako, who never reveals her face. Okudera favored Hanako too, noting her iconic status in the series.

As anticipation builds for the Blu-ray release on July 16, the cast and crew illuminated their excitement for fans to experience the finished product, praising the film's ability to cross generations. Nomura urged fans, "Enjoy the Blu-ray with your family and friends, and re-experience the joy of this film together."

The event concluded with heartfelt applause, truly showcasing the lasting charm of School Ghost Stories. The films are set for release at 6,050 yen each (tax included), allowing new and old fans to dive into this nostalgic classic once more.
