Born in Brooklyn, New York, Tony's early life was fraught with struggles. Raised by his teenage parents, he faced hardship from a young age. His father left when he was just a child, while his mother battled substance abuse. The weight of responsibility fell primarily on his Sicilian-immigrant grandparents, who had limited resources. The tragic loss of his grandmother at just 12 years old pushed him into a life marked by self-sufficiency and hard work. Juggling multiple jobs, Tony supported himself while tirelessly focusing on his education, ultimately graduating in the top five percent of his high school class.

Tony’s dedication to his studies paid off when he graduated from Florida State University in 1987 with a degree in business management information systems. His career began at Arthur Andersen in their IT consulting division, where Tony rose to the position of partner at the impressive age of 33. He later co-founded Tribridge, a successful technology firm in Tampa Bay, serving as CEO until its sale in 2017. Today, as the chairman and CEO of Appspace, he steers the vision of this leading workplace experience platform, influencing businesses globally.

Reflecting on his journey, DiBenedetto expresses gratitude for the support he received throughout his life. “It's an incredible feeling to have come full circle, from a kid who received so much support from the community to someone in a position to help young people fulfill their potential,” he remarked. His reception of the Horatio Alger Award goes beyond personal accolade; it symbolizes hope for young individuals facing their own challenges.

Tony’s commitment to future generations is further exemplified by his founding of the nonprofit organization, Think Big for Kids. Launched in 2016, the initiative focuses on breaking the cycles of poverty through career exploration, mentorship, and job placement programs aimed at middle and high school students. With over 8,000 young lives impacted to date, Think Big for Kids is set on paving pathways toward successful futures.

Moreover, in a striking gesture of support, Tony established an endowment of $1 million for first-generation college students at his alma mater, Florida State University. This contribution is a testament to his dedication to education and community service, alongside active involvement in organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs and the United Way Suncoast.

Chris Sullivan, a Horatio Alger Award predecessor, emphasized Tony’s journey, stating, “Despite unimaginable challenges in his early years, Tony persevered and worked tirelessly to earn the success that he has achieved.” His life story illustrates the profound effect education can have, motivating him to eliminate barriers for disadvantaged youth.

The Horatio Alger Association has maintained its mission since its inception in 1947, supporting young individuals in achieving their dreams through education and scholarship funding. This year, the association will award over $17 million in need-based scholarships, a testament to the values that drive the organization and its members.

Tony DiBenedetto will join 11 other remarkable leaders when he is formally inducted as a member of the Horatio Alger Association during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. from April 3-5, 2025. The event will not only celebrate their achievements but also serve as an opportunity for the 2025 National Scholars to connect and share their own stories of perseverance.
