China's 15th National Games Showcase Collaboration in the Greater Bay Area

China's 15th National Games: A Celebration of Unity in the Greater Bay Area

The 15th National Games of China, currently taking place in the vibrant Greater Bay Area (GBA), is a spectacular showcase of athleticism and cooperation. Over the last two weeks, the massive ring-shaped cauldron at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center has been a beacon of sporting excellence, illuminating a festival of events across 34 disciplines. This edition of the National Games is particularly significant as it's the first time the event has been co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, symbolizing a bridge across distinct social systems and customs.

As part of the cycling road race, participants embarked from the Zhuhai Museum in Guangdong and navigated through iconic landmarks such as the Macao Bridge and Hong Kong Disneyland, embodying the spirit of competition while promoting unity. These few hours of racing capture a pivotal moment in the journey of the GBA's development. The GBA not only consists of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of Hong Kong and Macao but also includes numerous cities in Guangdong Province.

The concept of the GBA was transformed into a national strategy in 2019, motivated by two decades of significant changes following the return of Hong Kong and Macao to China. Faced with challenges relating to industrial upgrades in the Pearl River Delta, the GBA initiative aims to deepen reforms and inspire innovative practices, facilitating cohesive growth across these regions.

Positively impacting local dynamics, the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has enhanced connectivity, enabling cyclists and travelers to swiftly cross the waterway between these territories in just half a day. As the longest sea-crossing bridge globally, its construction has led to over 90 million passenger trips in the seven years since its opening. The recent introduction of digital vehicle plates for private vehicles helps simplify travel for residents from both SARs.

Not only does this innovative infrastructure support seamless transit without altering existing systems, but it also fosters a thriving exchange of vehicles, data, and human resources among the three regions. The operational frequency of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link rivals that of regular shuttles, highlighting the GBA's growing significance as a global hub. Additionally, various ports in the GBA routinely witness citizens passing through customs seamlessly on their bicycles, a testament to the area's progress.

Despite occupying less than 0.6% of China's total landmass, the GBA is responsible for an impressive one-ninth of the country's GDP. One could argue that the ongoing National Games encapsulates a snapshot of the GBA's history, present circumstances, and its trajectory for the future.

Reflecting on the more than a century of separation between Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland, the sight of athletes united in competition serves as a poignant reminder of these regions forging ahead together. In this grand sporting event, participants and spectators are not only witnesses to remarkable athletic feats but also to a collective vision of collaboration, resilience, and progress in the Greater Bay Area.

As the games continue to unfold, the 15th National Games offer a compelling glimpse into the rich historical tapestry and the promising outlook for one of China's most dynamic regions. The blend of sporting prowess, cultural exchange, and economic ambition presents a promising narrative—the future of the Greater Bay Area shines bright as athletes dash forward in unison, united for a common purpose.
