SmallRig Awards Launches Global Filmmaker Talk Series

The SmallRig Awards has initiated an engaging new series, the Global Filmmaker Talk, beginning with a remarkable preview screening of Grand Tour, directed by Miguel Gomes. This event took place at the historic Culver Theater in Culver City, and it was co-presented alongside Acropolis Cinema. Grand Tour has made waves, winning Miguel Gomes the Best Director award at this year's prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

The screening was followed by a thought-provoking discussion between Gomes and Jordan Cronk, the founder of Acropolis Cinema. The conversation delved into the unique nonfiction techniques Gomes employed in crafting Grand Tour, which marks his inaugural appearance in Los Angeles, attracting a lively crowd of cinephiles, emerging filmmakers, film critics, industry professionals, and Oscar voters. Notably, Grand Tour is Portugal’s submission for the Academy Awards this year.

The SmallRig Awards, launched by SmallRig, a renowned provider of cost-effective and versatile equipment for filmmakers, journalists, and photographers, aims to promote impactful cinema and video works that spotlight pressing global social issues. The awards have a clear mission to discover genuine narratives that address challenges facing our society today.

The submission window for the SmallRig Awards remains open until December 31. They are inviting entries for fiction or documentary films and videos that are up to 40 minutes long. Each submission should present compelling stories that raise awareness about critical global issues, including marginalized communities lacking representation, global warming, animal conservation, economic and social inequality, health crises, cultural and social divides, and gender inequality.

A total of 22 awards will be distributed, with cash prizes ranging between $800 and $12,000. Award categories consist of:
