Peabody Municipal Light Plant Partners with Landis+Gyr for Smart Grid Advancements

Peabody Municipal Light Plant and Landis+Gyr Join Forces for Smart Grid Innovations

In a significant move towards enhanced energy management, Peabody Municipal Light Plant (PMLP) has partnered with Landis+Gyr to implement advanced metering infrastructure and smart grid services. This collaboration is set to provide improved services to PMLP's 27,000 electric customers, particularly in the Boston outskirts.

PMLP, known as the third largest municipally owned electric utility in Massachusetts, is adopting Landis+Gyr's Revelo platform, which employs grid sensing technology integrated with the reliable Gridstream® Connect RF Mesh IP network. The goal is to facilitate better communication capabilities throughout its service area, optimizing energy management and fostering customer engagement.

Joe Anastasi, the General Manager of PMLP, commented on the initiative, "Our grid modernization project aims to incorporate new energy resources and enhance management options for our customers. This technology is part of our ongoing efforts to modernize our communication network, improve system functionality, and implement public EV charging stations, in addition to scaling up solar generation and energy storage solutions. The real-time data processing capabilities of Revelo significantly enhance our situational awareness, allowing us to manage demand and maintain reliability effectively."

PMLP's efforts are not limited to a mere upgrade in technology but are focused on addressing critical energy supply challenges and enhancing customer services. This undertaking includes the addition of AMI 2.0 functionalities, reinforcing the utility’s commitment to vibrant energy management solutions.

Mark Ortega, Director of Distribution Sales at Landis+Gyr, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, "PMLP is navigating some of the most pressing energy supply and demand challenges present in today's landscape. Revelo's capabilities are foundational for improving energy management and ensuring high reliability within the grid system."

The Revelo platform is equipped with robust technology that allows continuous streaming of high-resolution data to detect loads and anomalies on either side of the meter. It’s adaptable, functioning on various network types, including RF Mesh IP, Wi-SUN protocol, and private LTE networks, making it versatile for different operational settings.

PMLP serves not only Peabody but also a segment of Lynnfield as a not-for-profit utility, committed to delivering reliable electricity and service with competitive rates. Their local power generation supports not only the regional power grid but also acts as a backup in emergencies, underlining their commitment to community reliability.

Landis+Gyr, a recognized leader in smart energy management solutions, focuses on empowering utilities and consumers alike. Their innovative technology is geared towards incentivizing reduced energy consumption and furthering decarbonization efforts across the electrical grid. By collaborating with PMLP, Landis+Gyr enhances its footprint in the municipality sector while supporting PMLP's mission to provide reliable services to its customers.

This partnership is a forward-looking initiative that underscores the necessity of modernizing infrastructure in line with evolving energy demands. As cities grow and change, it is vital that utilities like PMLP continue to innovate and adapt to ensure that they are able to meet the needs of their constituents effectively. The adoption of these advanced technologies signifies a major step forward in the journey towards a cleaner and more efficient energy future for Massachusetts.

As PMLP continues to implement these smart grid solutions, it sets an example of proactive measures within the utility sector, showcasing how technology can transform customer experience and energy management capabilities. This contract will not only enhance PMLP's operational efficiency but also pave the way for a sustainable energy landscape.
