Shell and METLEN Sign Historic Agreement to Supply LNG and Enhance Energy Trade
Historic Agreement Between Shell and METLEN on LNG Supply and Trade
On February 24, 2026, Shell and METLEN entered into a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing a collaboration framework for the supply and trading of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This partnership marks a pivotal moment in the energy landscape, particularly for Southeast Europe, where METLEN has solidified its position as a leading natural gas player.
Significance of the Partnership
Shell, one of the world's foremost producers and traders of LNG, is well-situated to meet the increasing demand for natural gas. By leveraging its vast global portfolio and advanced transportation capabilities, Shell can cater to the surging needs of European markets. On the other hand, METLEN stands strategically in the gas market, enhancing liquidity and streamlining access for additional European countries through its infrastructure in Greece.
The agreement between these two giants stipulates that they will supply and trade approximately 0.5 to 1.0 billion cubic meters of LNG annually over the next five years (2027-2031). Deliveries will specifically target the LNG regasification terminals located in Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis, Greece. Additionally, the partnership will explore avenues under the vertical gas corridor, thus broadening their reach to other European markets beyond Southeast Europe.
Leadership Commitment
Evangelos Mytilineos, Executive Chairman of METLEN, emphasized the significance of this MoU for both companies, asserting that it reinforces METLEN's role in the European natural gas markets. He stated, “Our cooperation signifies our mutual commitment to bolster Europe's energy resilience while supporting Greece's evolution into a key energy hub within the region.”
This framework represents a commitment from both parties to foster development in various European countries, in alignment with the vertical gas corridor initiative, showcasing international collaboration in energy. The signing of this MoU took place in Washington, D.C., and was attended by prominent figures such as Greece's Environment and Energy Minister, Stavros N. Papastavrou, and U.S. Energy Secretary, Chris Wright. Their presence underscores the strategic importance of this partnership not just for the companies involved, but for regional energy security as a whole.
