Chris Johnston Dominates the Yokohama Tire Bassmaster Elite at Santee Cooper Lakes
Canadian professional angler Chris Johnston has made waves in the fishing community by winning the highly competitive Yokohama Tire Bassmaster Elite tournament at Santee Cooper Lakes. With a staggering total weight of 113 pounds, 12 ounces over four days, Johnston's performance not only shattered expectations but also showcased his prowess in targeting southern largemouth bass. This victory marks his second blue trophy and significantly boosts his career earnings by awarding him a $100,000 prize.
Having joined the Progressive Bassmaster Elite Series with a fervent desire to capture a title centered around southern largemouth, Johnston's goal has finally come to fruition. His journey toward this considerable achievement began with determination and strategy.
“I’ve always been recognized primarily as a smallmouth specialist up north. However, I have developed strong consistency with southern waters over the years. This win feels unbelievable,” Johnston exclaimed. His statement reflects not only his happiness but also his dedication to mastering a different fishing environment.
Throughout the tournament, Johnston’s focus was on main lake docks in depths of less than ten feet. He believed these docks hosted schools of resident largemouth bass, likely untouched due to the surrounding vegetation and cypress trees. His approach yielded exceptional results, with the bass exhibiting sizes that many anglers dreamed of.
“I don’t think these docks receive much pressure, which is why the bass tend to be larger. The key was fishing those areas that were not frequently targeted,” he noted. Johnston's bait of choice was the Hideup Coike Fullcast, a unique lure that he believes was unfamiliar to most bass in the region. He modified the lure with a Gamakatsu treble hook and a 1/8-ounce tungsten sinker, allowing the material to sink efficiently while keeping the bass engaged.
While the competition did not involve forward-facing sonar, Johnston applied concepts learned from his experiences using Garmin LiveScope, helping him present the bait effectively at the desired depths. By controlling the depth and managing his bait’s movement, he attracted strikes that contributed to his impressive total catch.
Day 1 encounters proved slightly challenging as Johnston moved from Lake Moultrie to Lake Marion to locate active fish. Adjusting his strategy based on the day’s conditions, he quickly filled out limits rising from 21 pounds to over 30 pounds across subsequent days. As the tournament reached its climax, Johnston’s first catch of 6 pounds on Championship Sunday set a strong tone. Later, he hooked a 7-pound, 7-ounce bass, further fortifying his commanding lead.
“I set the hook and it pulled. It was like a heavy bag of bricks. But once I got it into the boat, I knew nobody could catch me in the top ten,” he recounted, excitement still evident in his voice. Johnston continued with an excellent string of catches, reinforcing his dominant position as the tournament progressed.
His fellow competitors, such as Brandon Palaniuk, who placed second, also put forth impressive efforts throughout the tournament. Despite having a fantastic week himself, Palaniuk acknowledged that it would have taken a monumental effort (34 pounds) to dethrone Johnston. They both agreed that this tournament was a memorable chapter in their fishing journey.
While this victory underscores Johnston's skill and strategy as an angler, it is also a nod to the rich fishing culture surrounding Santee Cooper Lakes. The venue has become synonymous with elite fishing competitions and continues to attract anglers seeking both excitement and challenge. With standing records and competitive spirits, events like the Pro-Guide Batteries Bassmaster Rookie of the Year race and the Phoenix Boats Big Bass awards highlight the dedication and talent present in today's bass fishing community.
As Johnston revels in his latest triumph, he leads the charge among Canadian anglers, demonstrating that determination and adaptive strategies can lead to astonishing outcomes, regardless of previous titles or tags. The fishing community eagerly awaits what's next in his illustrious career, inspiring both new and seasoned anglers alike.
