Engaging Fifth Graders in Life Skills through Financial Education
In September 2024, Broad Mind, a company committed to "unlocking the power of finance," launched an educational card game designed to teach elementary school students about financial literacy and life planning. The initiative aims to equip children with essential tools for managing their finances as they grow up. Recently, 83 fifth graders at Kashiwa City Second Elementary School participated in this interactive program on December 11, 2025.
Purpose and Structure of the Card Game
The game, titled "Life Produce," serves as a platform for students to simulate different life scenarios. It encourages them to think critically about their futures and the steps necessary to achieve their aspirations. Unlike traditional financial education that often emphasizes accumulating wealth, this game focuses on making valuable life decisions within a framework of limited resources, teaching children how to prioritize their goals effectively.
The target audience for this program extends from upper elementary to high school students, making it applicable across diverse educational subjects such as general studies, inquiry-based learning, career education, and financial education. This broad applicability ensures that as many students as possible benefit from the lessons on financial independence and life planning.
Student Feedback on the Experience
Feedback from the participating students reflects the game’s impact on their understanding of life choices. Here are some comments gathered from the fifth graders:
- - Game Experience: "I was able to create a life that aligns with my ideals. I learned that pursuing my dreams requires careful management of money and time."
- - Life Insights: "This experience highlighted the complexities of adult life, indicating that many challenges lie ahead. I feel prepared for the future with a variety of possibilities that I have explored."
- - Financial Awareness: "The reality check was significant. It became apparent that I need to be cautious about spending; funds deplete quickly if not managed well."
The second round of the game further reinforced learning. Students noted their improved outcomes when they approached the game with strategies and foresight, indicating growth in their understanding of life management.
Insights for Future Adult Choices
As part of the game, students also offered advice to their future selves based on what they learned:
- - "Embrace the unexpected in life, and ensure to pursue your interests, even if they require time and money. Remember to balance personal aspirations with family needs."
- - "Understanding the costs of raising children emphasizes the importance of financial planning. It’s critical to reflect on expenditures before making decisions."
- - "Regardless of societal expectations about marriage and parenthood, it’s vital to chart one’s own course in life."
Educational Environment and Parent Involvement
The classroom was filled with parental involvement during the session, highlighting a community commitment to fostering financial literacy at an early age. Broad Mind intends to continue promoting essential financial education and life planning in a way that resonates with young learners, preparing them for adulthood when financial decision-making becomes increasingly necessary.
