The Groundbreaking Electric Process Gas Heater by Alleima and Danieli Marks a New Era for Steel Production

In a significant advancement for the steel manufacturing industry, Alleima's Kanthal division has teamed up with Danieli to introduce a state-of-the-art electric process gas heater, set to be installed at the Emsteel Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant situated in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This innovative heater, which incorporates the Prothal® DH technology, will represent the first electric process gas heater for commercial DRI applications that Kanthal will supply, marking an important milestone in the ongoing quest for sustainable steel production.

The deployment of this pilot-scale heater will electrify a segment of Emsteel's existing heating system, ultimately contributing to their goal of reducing emissions and enhancing the eco-friendliness of their operations. With a planned delivery date set for early 2026, this initiative reinforces Emsteel's status as the leading manufacturer of steel and construction materials in the UAE.

Emsteel’s Abu Dhabi facility is known for producing quality long products such as heavy sections, bars, and wire rods, in addition to hosting an Energiron DRI plant. The introduction of a 1-megawatt electric process gas heater not only aligns with the company’s environmental objectives but also supports its ambition to operate a low-emission plant.

The Prothal® DH technology has been rigorously developed and tested by Kanthal and is now being prepared for wider commercialization alongside their strategic partner, Danieli. When this technology is fully scaled, it holds the potential to completely eliminate CO2 emissions linked with the heating process, while simultaneously increasing energy efficiency. This technological leap is important in transitioning towards environmentally responsible steelmaking practices.

Robert Stål, President of the Kanthal division, emphasized the importance of this pilot project, stating, "This pilot is an important step in the development and industrialization of full-scale electric process gas heaters for DRI and other ironmaking applications. We're proud to see that the technology is now being implemented in an end-user production setting, which will enable further opportunities for future sales and commercialization."

In 2024, Kanthal and Danieli solidified their partnership with an agreement aimed at developing and commercializing full-scale electric process gas heaters targeted at DRI and other ironmaking processes. The heating solution being created accommodates hydrogen, natural gas, and mixed energy sources, thus facilitating the retrofitting of existing DRI facilities. Through the integration of this advanced technology in hydrogen-ready Energiron DRI plants, it will be possible to achieve fully emission-free DRI production. Even for plants reliant on natural gas, switching to an electrified heating system is expected to result in more than a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions.

The move towards electrification in industrial processes is becoming increasingly crucial as industries globally aim to meet stringent environmental standards and customer demands for sustainability. Products manufactured with innovative technologies not only improve operational efficiency but also align with global efforts to combat climate change.
