HealthWell Foundation Reaches New Milestone Supporting Cancer Patients with Financial Aid

HealthWell Foundation: A Lifeline for Cancer Patients

The HealthWell Foundation®, a notable independent non-profit organization, has recently marked a significant achievement by providing critical financial assistance to more than half a million individuals battling cancer. Founded in 2003, this foundation has established itself as a crucial support mechanism for underinsured Americans, ensuring that economic barriers do not prevent access to life-saving treatments.

Since its inception, HealthWell has disbursed an impressive $2.6 billion through an extensive portfolio of over 40 oncology funds. This financial aid has been pivotal in enabling patients to cover the costs associated with medication copayments and insurance premiums. A total of 503,644 patients have benefited from 767,950 oncology-related grants, showcasing the organization's profound impact on the lives of those affected by cancer.

Transforming Lives Through Financial Support

The foundation's commitment extends beyond mere numbers; it embodies the real-life stories of struggle and triumph. One illustrative example is that of Carolyn S., a patient who shared her journey in Cancer Health’s Cancer Health 25 issue. As an educator, Carolyn faced challenging financial decisions while trying to manage her multiple myeloma treatment expenses. She expressed, "Knowing that I don't have that financial pressure... has been a great relief and lessened a tremendous stress. I'm just so grateful for that and for the help from the HealthWell Foundation along my journey." This sentiment resonates with many who face the dual burden of a cancer diagnosis and financial instability.

The average financial assistance grant provided by HealthWell is $5,060, a substantial amount that can often mean the difference between life-saving care and unaffordable expenses. The foundation also administers specific funds aimed at addressing the behavioral health needs related to cancer, offering support not just for patients but also for their caregivers.

Over the years, HealthWell has helped 728 patients through 1,070 grants, specifically focusing on behavioral health costs, highlighting their understanding of the holistic needs of cancer patients.

Commitment to the Oncology Community

As the nation recognizes National Cancer Survivor's Month, HealthWell remains steadfast in its mission to serve the oncology community. Michael S. Heimall, President and CEO of HealthWell Foundation, stated, "We know how financially devastating a cancer diagnosis can be. Eliminating financial barriers to care through our oncology funds allows patients to focus on receiving the care they need without the added stress and uncertainty about how to afford it."

The foundation’s comprehensive approach helps ensure that patients can access necessary medications and treatments, thereby improving their chances of survival and maintaining their well-being. Their 41 oncology funds, including targeted assistance for patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Mantle Cell Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma, stand as a testament to their dedication.

HealthWell's Growing Impact

The HealthWell Foundation's contributions do not go unnoticed. Recently recognized as one of America’s top charities by Forbes, ranking 17th in 2025, they maintain a 100% fundraising efficiency—a feat that ensures every dollar goes towards assisting patients in need. Since its formation, HealthWell has distributed more than $5.2 billion in financial support through over 2.2 million grants, reinforcing its role as a safety net across 100 disease areas.
