BD Celebrates 65 Years of Innovation at Broken Bow Facility
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a prominent name in medical technology, marked a significant milestone on October 18, 2025, as it celebrated 65 years of manufacturing excellence at its Broken Bow, Nebraska facility. This site has played an integral part of BD's extensive U.S. manufacturing network and stands as a beacon of innovation in healthcare manufacturing.
When BD first commenced operations in Broken Bow, it was a modest 13,753-square-foot steel building staffed by 20 employees. Over the decades, the facility has grown substantially, now occupying a sprawling 310,000 square feet and employing nearly 600 dedicated personnel. Today, the site holds the title of the world’s largest manufacturer of BD Vacutainer® tubes, producing billions of these tubes and other essential medical devices annually. These products are critical in millions of healthcare settings, enhancing specimen collection quality and ensuring the safety and comfort of patients.
Bridget Bagnato, the worldwide president of BD's Specimen Management business, highlighted the importance of the Broken Bow team. “For 65 years, our Broken Bow team has played a vital role in helping health care providers deliver quality care to patients around the world,” she stated. This sentiment emphasizes BD’s long-standing commitment to U.S. manufacturing as well as to the communities it serves.
Investment in Nebraska
Continuing its investment strategy, BD is dedicated to enhancing its operations in Nebraska, reinforcing its longstanding commitment to the state's manufacturing prowess and healthcare innovation. Since 2020, BD has invested over $50 million to modernize and expand its Broken Bow operations, which include significant upgrades to its state-of-the-art chemistry lab. BD also operates four manufacturing sites in Nebraska with approximately 2,700 associates, making it the largest manufacturing employer in the state.
Moreover, the company is making strides to expand its production capabilities with new investments amounting to over $35 million and the addition of 50 jobs at its Columbus facility, specifically aimed at boosting the production of prefilled flush syringes. This move is part of BD's strategy to enhance the resilience of the U.S. healthcare ecosystem—pivotal in today’s health landscape.
BD’s manufacturing prowess is evident across its 30 facilities located throughout 16 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, employing over 10,000 individuals. These facilities serve as a vital part of the U.S. medical device supply chain, ensuring consistent access to quality medical devices nationwide.
Commemorating the Anniversary
The event in Nebraska not only celebrated BD's achievements but also recognized the dedication of its longest-serving associates. The anniversary festivities included accolades for four employees with over 40 years of service and nearly 40 associates celebrating more than 25 years of commitment.
In a bid to give back to the community, BD announced a donation of $6,500 to the Custer County Foundation to fund scholarships for local graduates pursuing healthcare careers. This ongoing support, with an additional $40,000 contributed over the last five years, helps advance youth programs, STEM education, and initiatives aimed at improving health and well-being in the community.
