Shanghai Electric Completes Training Program for Thar Project Employees in Pakistan

Shanghai Electric has recently concluded an intensive eight-day training program for twenty employees involved in the Thar Integrated Energy Project, located in Pakistan's Block I of the Thar Coal Basin. This initiative, part of Shanghai Electric's commitment to developing skilled professionals in the modern energy and industrial sectors, aims to promote sustainable industrial growth with a strong focus on the local workforce.

The training, held in Shanghai and Beijing, served as a unique opportunity for participants to gain practical experience and deep insights into various relevant topics. Throughout the program, attendees interacted with industry experts and engaged in hands-on learning activities to enhance their abilities. Key highlights included seminars stressing Shanghai Electric's corporate culture and its advanced technologies, along with guided tours of specific company facilities. Notably, participants explored the Shanghai Boiler Works factory, allowing them to witness firsthand the operational excellence that characterizes Shanghai Electric.

One participant, Zia ul Qama, the Business Operations Manager of the Thar Project, shared his reflections on the experience, stating, “It was enriching to closely observe China's vibrant culture and learn about Shanghai Electric's operations. This program has inspired me to strive harder towards the company’s objectives and my own personal growth in learning.”

The Thar Integrated Energy Project, operational since February 2023, plays an essential role in addressing Pakistan's energy demands. With an annual production capacity of 9,000 megawatt-hours, the project supplies electricity to nearly four million households. However, it is not just a simple energy provider. It also stands as a testament to Shanghai Electric's dedication to nurturing sustainable growth and promoting social advancement within the region.

In addition to regular training programs, Shanghai Electric emphasizes gender inclusivity by introducing targeted initiatives to enhance opportunities for women. The company has worked closely with the Thar Project to cultivate a supportive and equitable work environment, resulting in significant progress in workplace inclusion within the area. This comprehensive approach to empowerment and equality was recently recognized when Shanghai Electric received the Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Award in 2023, conferred by the Pakistan Employers' Federation and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Moreover, Shanghai Electric's sustainability efforts were acknowledged, as the company won the Contributors to Shared Prosperity award during the 16th Annual CSR Summit held in August 2023, an event marking the tenth anniversary of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This recognition highlights the considerable strides Shanghai Electric has made toward aligning its corporate goals with community development, demonstrating their commitment to not only meeting business expectations but also furthering the welfare of the regions they serve.

As Shanghai Electric continues to establish itself as a key player in Pakistan’s energy sector, its focus remains unwavering on fostering local talent, implementing sustainable practices, and contributing positively to society. The completion of the training program is yet another example of how the company is investing in its workforce to adapt to and thrive in an evolving energy landscape.
