EchoStar Partners with MDA Space for Revolutionary Satellite Communication System

Groundbreaking Announcement in Satellite Technology

As part of a strategic expansion into the communication sector, EchoStar Corporation has appointed MDA Space Ltd. as the main contractor for an unprecedented low Earth orbit (LEO) direct-to-device (D2D) satellite constellation. This initiative marks a significant milestone in global satellite communications. Following an extensive selection process, MDA Space was recognized for its proven capabilities in delivering cutting-edge satellite technology.

The contract, which is valued at an impressive $1.3 billion and potentially increases to $2.5 billion with future options, focuses on the design, manufacture, and testing of over 100 advanced MDA AURORA™ D2D satellites. This innovative satellite constellation will adhere to the latest 3GPP standards, making it the first comprehensive implementation of a non-terrestrial network (NTN) using LEO satellites.

EchoStar anticipates that this technology will facilitate reliable voice, messaging, broadband data, and video services to users across the globe directly through standard 5G devices, creating seamless and efficient connectivity on an unprecedented scale. As demand for mobile connectivity rises, there are plans to expand the satellite network exponentially, with goals to deploy thousands of additional satellites in the future.

EchoStar’s CEO, Hamid Akhavan, emphasized the strategic advantage of this collaboration, stating: “Our combined expertise in satellite operations and terrestrial networks positions us uniquely to launch this wide-scale LEO constellation.” The partnership not only serves the emerging consumer market but is also expected to support diverse sectors, including public safety and government services across various regions such as the U.S. and Europe.

One of the key components of the project is the MDA AURORA™ D2D software-defined satellites, which were designed to meet EchoStar's stringent technical specifications. These satellites promise high performance and improved connectivity, providing customers with enhanced user experience and operational reliability, thereby meeting the growing demands of their business.

The technical capabilities include a large user antenna for optimal connectivity, an onboard processing unit compliant with the latest standards, and advanced optical inter-satellite links establishing a robust communication network in space. MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley expressed pride in the selection, suggesting that it reinforces the company’s leadership status in the NTN market.

In addition to improving existing communication services, EchoStar’s LEO constellation satellites will support connectivity for various devices, including IoT sensors and vehicles, bringing comprehensive solutions to remote and underserved areas.

The manufactoring phase of this project will take place in MDA Space’s high-volume facility located in Montreal, which is currently undergoing a significant expansion. This state-of-the-art facility will enable the production of these next-generation satellites. With plans for commercial service beginning in 2029, the first batch of satellites is expected to be delivered by 2028.

This contract represents MDA Space's fourth LEO constellation project within a little over three years, showcasing its rapid growth and innovation in the satellite industry. As the demand for global connectivity continues to evolve, this collaboration is set to redefine how users connect with each other and the world around them, paving the path for future advancements in satellite technology.
