Upcoming Edo Professions Exhibition



The Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library is thrilled to announce its participation in the Tokyo Cultural Heritage Week 2025, which will be held from September 18, 2025. As part of this exciting initiative, the library will host a special digital exhibition titled Edo's Professions.

Exhibition Overview


Due to ongoing renovation work at the library, this year's exhibition will primarily take place online, showcasing the library's collection through a digital platform. A selection of six nationally designated important cultural properties related to Edo Castle will also be displayed at a physical venue from October 25 to October 31, 2025.

What to Expect?


During the exhibition titled Edo's Professions, attendees can explore intriguing questions such as, “What types of jobs did the people of Edo engage in?” and “What were the popular dining establishments of the time?” Through carefully curated materials from the library's special collection, this event aims to enlighten visitors about the diverse occupations that existed during the Edo period, incentivizing a deeper understanding of Tokyo's historical culture.

Exhibition Schedule


1. Web Exhibition: The online showcase will run from October 31, 2025, to November 30, 2025.
2. Physical Exhibit: The important cultural properties will be displayed from October 25, 2025, to October 31, 2025, with visiting hours from 10:00 AM to 8:45 PM on weekdays, and from 10:00 AM to 5:15 PM on weekends and public holidays.

Exhibition Content


The Edo's Professions exhibition will be structured into seven captivating chapters:
  • - Preserving
  • - Dining
  • - Entertainment
  • - Supportive Roles
  • - Education & Medicine
  • - Living & Utilizing Resources
  • - Involvement with Edo Castle

Each chapter will provide engaging content such as images of the materials, informative captions, interactive quizzes related to the displayed items, and special opportunities for downloading original images. Additionally, visitors will have the chance to create their personalized catalog that showcases their experience at the exhibition.

The exhibition aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the jobs of the Edo period while making the experience interactive and educational for those of all ages.
