Celebrating a Decade of 'Asu Challe!' and Its Impact on DE&I Education in Japan

Celebrating a Decade of 'Asu Challe!'

In 2025, the 'Asu Challe!' initiative, organized by the JAPAN FOUNDATION Para Sports Support Center (Parasapo), is proudly celebrating its tenth anniversary. This program aims to foster a society where everyone can thrive through diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I). Since its inception in 2016, the organization has rolled out numerous educational programs targeting elementary, middle, high, and special needs schools across Japan, alongside corporate and governmental training initiatives.

Growth of 'Asu Challe!'

From a humble beginning—with just one large vehicle carrying twelve wheelchairs for basketball and a small team of instructors—'Asu Challe!' has dramatically expanded. By the end of the 2024 fiscal year, the program aims to have reached approximately 580,000 participants through nearly 5,600 events. The current fiscal year, starting on April 9, 2025, kicked off with the 'Asu Challe! Academy' and is poised to facilitate over 900 events throughout the year in collaboration with sponsors such as JTB Corporation, ASICS Corporation, NEC Corporation, Japan Airlines (JAL), and Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Educational and Developmental Milestones

Over the years, 'Asu Challe!' has evolved to adapt to societal changes, utilizing innovative approaches to communicate its message: a challenge for a better tomorrow. The program's commitment to continuous learning has been evident, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, where online sessions were introduced to ensure uninterrupted education.

Yamamoto Eri, Director of the DE&I Program Promotion Department, shared, "Many participants express that our sessions opened their eyes to new perspectives. By shifting their views, individuals transform their mindset from 'I cannot' to 'I can,' thus enriching our DE&I society with new allies in this mission."

As we look back on ten years of progress, the question arises: how has society changed as a result of these efforts? The Parasapo remains committed to exploring these transformations as they continue their journey of growth and challenge.

Highlights from 2024

In the upcoming fiscal year, 'Asu Challe!' will mark several significant achievements:
1. The program will celebrate 5,000 total events, reaching this milestone at the 'Asu Challe! School' held at Katori City School in Chiba Prefecture on September 27, 2024.
2. A new initiative, 'Asu Challe! Messenger,' focusing on high school career education, will be introduced, starting with a program for around 80 first-year students at Nagano City High School, aimed at enhancing self-awareness and problem-solving abilities among youth.
3. The event 'Parasports x Puzzle Solving - Aim to Become an Inspiring Athlete!' will be hosted for families at the Japan Foundation Para Arena, engaging participants in a fun and interactive format.

Voice of the Participants

Feedback from participants continues to impress, with many expressing how impactful the experience has been. The innovative structure of the program has allowed individuals to glean valuable insights and reassess their abilities and potential, fostering a spirit of inclusiveness across various communities.

The Future of 'Asu Challe!'

Looking ahead, 'Asu Challe!' is set to launch new programs such as 'Para Support! Inclusive Sports Day' in April, aiming to integrate inclusive sports in school festivals, educating both teachers and students on the importance of inclusive practices.

In conclusion, the impact of the 'Asu Challe!' initiative reaches far beyond the immediate benefits. It has contributed to a larger societal shift toward acceptance and inclusion, making strides toward a future where everyone can participate in sports and broader community activities, regardless of their physical abilities. The Parasapo remains dedicated to evolving their offerings and meeting the diverse needs of Japan's communities.
