Major Infrastructure Project on Delaware Memorial Bridge

The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) recently announced a crucial infrastructure preservation initiative set to begin on September 7, 2026. This project focuses on the New Jersey-bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge (DMB) and is expected to be completed by November 24, 2026, just in time for the holiday travel rush.

The work will entail the comprehensive replacement of 46 bridge joints, including 24 expansion joints and 22 relief joints. The teams will use specialized Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) to ensure the joints are robust and can withstand the test of time. Traffic Changes to Anticipate

To manage the ongoing construction while maintaining traffic flow, a new traffic pattern will be implemented. From September 7 until the end of the construction period, 24/7 double lane closures will be enacted on the northbound side of the bridge. However, the two left lanes will remain open for all traffic types, ensuring some level of passage regardless of the construction.

Specific Changes Include:

• - Northbound Span (NJ-Bound): Continuous double lane closures will be in effect on the northbound structure while leaving the two left lanes open for all vehicles.
• - Southbound Span (DE-Bound): To uphold the bridge’s overall crossing capacity, a barrier-separated bypass lane will be developed on the exterior lane, dedicated solely for passenger vehicles heading to the NJ Turnpike and US Route 40. Commerical vehicles like trucks and buses will not be permitted in this bypass lane.
