KOBE ART MARCHÉ 2026 Concludes with Record-Breaking Attendance
The recent KOBE ART MARCHÉ 2026, managed by TODOROKI, a creative company based in Tokyo, marked a significant milestone in its history. This contemporary art fair, organized by the Kobe Arts Promotion Association, achieved unprecedented success with approximately 5,000 attendees and total sales reaching around 47 million yen, making it the most successful edition to date.
Held from May 22 to May 24, 2026, at the Meriken Park Oriental Hotel in Kobe, this year’s event was the 17th iteration of the fair. It showcased the breathtaking surroundings of Kobe, surrounded by the sea and mountains, providing a unique and open atmosphere that resonated with art lovers and newcomers alike. A total of 43 galleries and around 250 artists participated, featuring 48 booths that utilized hotel room spaces creatively.
The attendance and sales figures represent a steady growth from previous years, with 3,000 visitors and 32 million yen in sales in 2024, followed by 4,000 visitors and 45 million yen in 2025. These impressive numbers indicate a flourishing trend in the event's popularity and its appeal to a wider audience.
Post-event surveys revealed that an impressive 88.3% of attendees expressed satisfaction, with 58.3% reporting that it was their first visit. This indicates that KOBE ART MARCHÉ 2026 successfully attracted not only established art enthusiasts but also new audiences eager to explore contemporary art.
New Initiatives for Broader Engagement
This year’s fair emphasized accessibility and engagement with those unfamiliar with the art scene. To encourage visits from non-traditional art audience members, TODOROKI implemented several innovative initiatives aimed at fostering a welcoming environment.
One of the standout initiatives was the launch of the
KOBE SUBWAY MUSEUM, an art experience integrated into the daily environment of Kobe’s coastal subway stations. This installation allowed citizens and visitors to interact with art in a familiar context, promoting cultural exploration while navigating the city.
Additionally, a pre-event called the
Second Kobe Flea Market was held on February 28 and March 1, where artists were invited to perform live painting. Notably, Mahiro Kunisada, a past award winner from the fair's open exhibition “Artist meets Art Fair,” featured a demonstration of his painting process, showing attendees the creation journey from start to finish in the vibrant green hills of the venue.
The introduction of the
First AI ART meets Art Fair also sparked excitement, where artists were encouraged to incorporate AI into their works. This initiative expanded the horizons of creativity in contemporary art, emphasizing the potential for technology to enhance artistic expression beyond traditional boundaries.
