CT United FC Welcomes Shavar Thomas as Head Coach
In a groundbreaking move for the franchise, CT United FC has announced the appointment of Shavar Thomas as their first-ever Head Coach. This landmark decision comes as the club gears up for its inaugural season in MLS NEXT Pro in 2026 and marks a significant step towards achieving its goal of bringing Major League Soccer to Connecticut.
Shavar Thomas's journey in professional soccer can be traced back to the very state where he will now lead a team. His formative years were spent at The Hotchkiss School located in Lakeville, Connecticut, where he blossomed into one of the area's standout defensive talents. From there, his career took off at the University of Connecticut, where he was a central figure on one of the nation’s most celebrated collegiate teams. His talents caught the eye of MLS scouts, and in 2003, he was selected 10th overall during the MLS SuperDraft. This ushered in a professional career that would see him earn nearly 200 caps in MLS, garner multiple individual awards, including Defender of the Year honors, and gain selection to the prestigious MLS All-Star team.
On the international stage, Thomas was a key player for the Jamaican National Team, earning over 50 caps and serving as team captain during major tournaments. His discipline, leadership, and cool demeanor under pressure have made him a revered figure in Caribbean soccer.
As a coach, Thomas's accomplishments have matched his playing career. He led Portmore United to claim the Jamaican Premier League title, which secured the team’s participation in the Concacaf Champions League. His coaching philosophy is centered around a high-energy and disciplined style of play, emphasizing strong defensive frameworks and intelligent transitions—principles that align seamlessly with the ethos of CT United.
André Swanston, the CEO of CT Sports Group, expressed his enthusiasm for Thomas's appointment, noting, "For those familiar with Shavar, his success is not a surprise. His relentless work ethic and leadership qualities are what we want to be the bedrock of CT United from day one."
In expressing his gratitude for this historic opportunity, Thomas remarked, "It’s an incredible honor to build a professional club right where my American soccer journey began. I’m eager to develop a disciplined and fearless team that embodies the pride of Connecticut. This is just the beginning; we're on the path to achieving something much larger."
Denis Hamlett, who played an instrumental role in the search for the new head coach, highlighted the importance of this hire, stating, "Shavar combines elite playing experience with tactical acumen and natural leadership. He has demonstrated his ability to win and develop talent, making him the ideal candidate to forge CT United’s identity."
With Thomas now at the helm, CT United FC is poised to embark on a new era, leading the club into MLS NEXT Pro while simultaneously laying the groundwork for its future in Major League Soccer.
