Posh Electric Secures EMA Grant for Innovative Sodium-ion Battery Project

On August 5, 2025, Posh Electric, a wholly owned subsidiary of Posh Energy based in Singapore, announced its achievement in securing a grant from Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA). This grant aims to facilitate a trial for a sodium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), thereby pushing forward the necessity for environmentally sustainable and scalable energy storage solutions critical for the city's transition to renewable energy resources.

The project spearheaded by Posh Electric will develop and deploy a 1-megawatt-hour sodium-ion BESS. This innovative system is intended to manage the irregularity associated with solar energy production. In partnership with the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) – part of the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research of Singapore (A*STAR) – and Utraco Pte Ltd, this project will take place at Utraco's facilities. The BESS is set to synergize with a 600 kW rooftop solar array for optimal energy storage, enhancing load-shifting capabilities and addressing intermittency challenges posed by solar power.

The rising acknowledgement of sodium-ion batteries stems from their advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries. Sodium is naturally abundant, being over 1,000 times more readily available than lithium. Moreover, the extraction and processing of sodium entail a simpler method, which comes with a lower environmental impact. This aspect is particularly relevant as the global demand for lithium is projected to increase dramatically—expected to swell twenty-fold by 2030. Sodium-ion batteries represent a promising and sustainable alternative that could defy traditional energy storage methods, both technically and economically.

Dr. Wesley Zheng, the CEO of Posh Energy, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the EMA's support for this groundbreaking project. He remarked, "We are thrilled to have received support from the Energy Market Authority for this landmark project. Over the years, we have developed unique battery control hardware and software solutions to manage a variety of battery chemistries, including sodium-ion batteries. By maximizing the natural abundance of sodium and integrating it with renewable energy solutions, we aim to offer a sustainable and scalable alternative to conventional battery technologies. This grant is a testament to the innovative approach taken by POSH in battery system integration, and we are eager to demonstrate its benefits to Singapore and beyond."

Posh Energy has established itself as a frontrunner in advanced battery technology solutions, focusing meticulously on the provision of innovative energy storage systems to cater to the growing renewable energy sector. Through a collaborative approach and ongoing research, Posh Energy is unwavering in its commitment to tackling the pressing challenges associated with energy storage, paving the way towards a cleaner energy future.

As this project unfolds, it has the potential to play a crucial role in the broader adoption of renewable energy sources in Singapore, showcasing the viability of sodium-ion technology as a sustainable energy storage solution that could satisfy the increasing global demand for clean energy.
