REACH LA's Emergency Response to Wildfires
In light of the devastating wildfires that have recently swept through Los Angeles, REACH LA, a vital community organization dedicated to serving LGBTQIA+ people of color, has stepped up with an important relief initiative. With a commitment to providing free mental health therapy and essential aid to the affected members of the community, REACH LA is transforming its resources into a beacon of hope for those who need it the most.
The organization has recognized that a significant number of individuals in its network have been directly affected by the destruction caused by these fires, including several households in the historically Black neighborhood of Altadena. In response, REACH LA has pledged that
100% of the funds raised during its upcoming annual gala, scheduled for
February 15, will go directly to fire relief efforts. This determined move underscores the organization’s commitment to not just the LGBTQIA+ community but to all residents of Los Angeles facing unprecedented challenges.
Starting
January 21, REACH LA is expanding its services beyond its usual clientele to the general public, with the launch of a
Community Response Hub. This initiative offers
100% free mental health therapy regardless of immigration status or insurance complexities. This is a crucial move, as many individuals find themselves in precarious circumstances due to the compounded impact of the fires.
Community Response Hub Services
The Community Response Hub will operate on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, providing assistance during key appointment windows. Here’s a breakdown of what the hub will offer:
- - Drop-off/Pick-up of clothing and essential necessities to help those impacted,
- - Transportation services from REACH LA’s offices, generously sponsored by UBER,
- - Resources for TAP cards to facilitate public transit,
- - Free printing of vital documents to ensure individuals have the paperwork they need,
- - Connection to essential community services for ongoing support,
- - A safe and welcoming space for the community to gather, connect, and support one another.
CEO Miguel Bujanda expressed deep concern about the destruction and the profound effect on marginalized communities. "Our hearts are broken by the devastation caused by the fires, affecting low-income families and individuals who have lost their homes and livelihoods. At REACH LA, we are dedicated to supporting those affected by providing free therapy and creating a resource center for essential aid," he said.
A Night of Healing and Celebration
With the gala just around the corner, REACH LA is not only focused on fundraising but also on creating a moment of joy and healing amidst the heartache. This year’s gala will be hosted by renowned figures from the drag community, including
Bob the Drag Queen and
Monét X Change, bringing a celebratory spirit to the occasion. The event will also honor work from remarkable individuals such as
Jessica Betts, along with her wife,
Niecy Nash-Betts, and activist
Blair Imani.
Tickets are available for $300, and tables can be purchased for $3,000, with half the proceeds going towards community members who have been affected by the wildfires. The organization aims to raise
$500,000 to help facilitate its extensive relief operations.
In light of these ongoing efforts, REACH LA invites everyone to be part of the movement—whether by attending the gala, spreading the word about the Community Response Hub, or contributing through donations. Together, the community can help each other stand resiliently in the face of adversity.
