The Harmony of Jazz and Flamenco: A Groundbreaking Festival in Japan
Japan is set to witness a historical celebration of music with the inaugural
Flamenco Jazz Festival Japan, taking place from
May 22 to 31 across the iconic cities of
Tokyo, Yokohama, and
Kamakura. Organized by
Oh! Jazz, this festival aims to create an unparalleled sensory experience that transcends traditional music festivals by intertwining the rich traditions of
Spanish flamenco with the vibrant essence of
jazz.
The festival kicks off on
May 22 at the Cervantes Cultural Center in Tokyo, featuring an engaging talk that delves into pivotal moments of jazz and flamenco. Esteemed artists like
Paco de Lucía,
Chano Domínguez, and
Jorge Pardo will be highlighted in discussions led by filmmaker
Carlos Aguilar and researcher
Anita Haas. This talk sets the tone for a week filled with dynamic cultural programming designed to captivate a diverse audience.
Following the introductory event, a grand opening reception will take place at the
Spanish Embassy in Japan on
May 27, signaling the launch of various cultural activities that blend music with gastronomy. Seven internationally recognized artists, all with Grammy accolades, will perform at carefully selected venues to deliver memorable concerts.
On
May 28, renowned performers such as
Alex Conde and
Josémi Carmona will grace the stage at
The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, while the next day, a special gastronomic experience awaits guests at the
Westin Yokohama, led by Michelin-starred Spanish chef
Israel Ramos.
Perhaps the festival's highlight will be the
gala concert on
May 30, hosted at the historic Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura, which promises a fusion of music, cuisine, and spirituality in a breathtaking setting. The grand finale on
May 31 will be a closing concert at
BODY&SOUL, Tokyo's premier jazz club, that also partners with Oh! Jazz.
As part of the festival’s expansive outreach, cutting-edge technology from Oh! Jazz will broadcast the gala concert to over
35 million households globally, affirming the festival's intention to establish itself as a pivotal event in the international cultural calendar. The initiative is consistent with Oh! Jazz’s mission to unite people through the universal language of jazz, breaking cultural and geographical barriers.
CEO and founder of Oh! Jazz,
Jesus Perez-Gua, expressed excitement about the festival, stating, "We are thrilled to take this new step in showcasing flamenco jazz and Spanish culture to the world. Japan, known as 'the second home of flamenco,' is the perfect setting for this cultural bridge, demonstrating how jazz can connect various traditions and styles through its universal appeal."
