Natura Resources Achieves 1,000 Hours with Molten Salt Test System



Natura Resources LLC, a company specializing in advanced molten salt reactor technology, has announced a groundbreaking milestone: the successful operation of its Molten Salt Test System (MSTS) for an impressive 1,000 hours. This accomplishment marks a significant step forward in the development of their innovative reactors that utilize liquid fuels, showcasing the potential for cleaner and more efficient energy generation.

The MSTS is designed to simulate integrated reactor conditions by circulating molten salt, a critical component in the operation of molten salt reactors (MSRs). The journey began with a meticulous process where a sample of 50 gallons of molten salt was purified over a period of 270 hours using Natura's proprietary Fluoride Salt Purification (FSP) system combined with a hydrofluorination method. Throughout this purification phase, samples were continuously tested to ensure the removal of impurities, particularly oxygen, which is notorious for causing corrosion in the reactor's components.

Following the successful purification of the molten salt, it was integrated into the MSTS, where extended duration testing began. Over 750 of the 1,000 hours were monitored remotely by operators, who verified the system's ability to run autonomously. The engineers also tested the loop's capability to perform a controlled shutdown and rapidly drain the system, a vital proof point for the safety features of the MSR technology. Jordan Robison, the Chief Operating Officer at Natura Resources, commented, "Demonstrating the molten salt loop at this scale is a critical advancement as we continue to move closer to commercial-scale operations. To date, most lab settings have purified only grams of salt. Our team not only purified 50 gallons of fluoride salt but then proceeded to run our 50-gallon salt loop for 1,000 hours. This milestone clearly demonstrates that long-term operation of a molten salt system is safe, stable, and manageable."

Looking ahead, Natura Resources is planning further enhancements to the MSTS. These improvements will focus on the monitors and instrumentation used for materials testing, aimed at gathering high-quality operational data that is crucial for both regulatory licensing and future reactor designs. This data will provide insights into materials performance, corrosion behavior, and salt chemistry under conditions of prolonged operation.
