The impressive Folger Shakespeare Library, renowned for housing the largest collection of Shakespeare-related literature in the world, is excited to introduce Adjoa Andoh MBE as the inaugural resident artist in its newly established Director's Residency program. This exciting initiative was created to bridge the gap between prominent artists or intellectuals and the rich resources of the library, aiming to foster a deeper appreciation of Shakespeare and the humanities in innovative ways.

From April 19 to 25, 2026, Andoh will be in Washington, DC, leveraging the library's extensive collection and engaging in various community activities. Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper, Folger's Director, elucidates the ethos of the residency: “The Folger is situated at the heart of our nation's capital, uniquely positioned to serve as a conduit between prominent artists, scholars, and the community. Our hope is to illuminate fresh perspectives and interpretations of Shakespeare's work through such interactions.”

Adjoa Andoh is a celebrated actress, writer, and director who has captivated audiences worldwide, notably for her role as Lady Danbury in Netflix’s series Bridgerton. However, her extensive credentials include a deep connection to Shakespearean theatre, highlighted by her landmark role in the UK's first all women-of-color production of Richard II at Shakespeare's Globe. As a theatre instructor and mentor, she has played critical roles in promoting diverse storytelling in the performing arts.

Residents participating in this program will have the opportunity to consult the Folger's unrivaled collection, take part in public programs, visit other cultural institutions, and work directly with students and community members. During Andoh's residency, she will conduct a public talk on April 19 and host a screening of Richard II on April 21. Additionally, she will be the special guest at the 2026 Folger Gala on April 24.

Dr. Karim-Cooper expressed enthusiasm over Andoh’s involvement, stating, “With her vast expertise in Shakespeare and the performing arts, Adjoa embodies the creative spirit we seek in this residency. Since embarking on her career over four decades ago, Andoh has accumulated a remarkable repertoire. Her significant contributions to the arts not only span film and television but also feature stage productions at major UK venues like the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Moreover, her accolades in the creative industries extend to numerous awards, including NAACP nominations.

In 2023, she co-directed, produced, and starred in a fresh adaptation of Richard III, exemplifying her commitment to revitalizing Shakespearean narratives for modern audiences. As an associate artist at the Royal Shakespeare Company and an esteemed fellow within various literary associations, Andoh continues to break ground in the arts through her leadership and mentorship.
