Hyosung's Strategic Push in HVDC Technology for Future Power Grids

Hyosung's Focus on HVDC Technologies and Future-Proofing Energy Infrastructure

Hyosung Heavy Industries, led by Chairman Cho Hyun-joon, is at the forefront of developing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, which is critical for modernizing power grids in the era of renewable energy and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. As the energy landscape undergoes significant transformation, the importance of next-generation grid technologies has surged, with HVDC systems emerging as a viable solution for efficient electricity transmission, especially from remote renewable energy generation sites to urban demand centers.

Why HVDC Technologies Matter

The shift towards renewable energy has also prompted shifts in transmission methods. Unlike traditional alternating current (AC) systems, HVDC enables power to be transmitted over long distances with minimal losses, making it ideal for connecting remote wind and solar farms to the central grid. Hyosung recognizes the growing global demand for these technologies and has committed to developing proprietary HVDC solutions.

In recent years, the global HVDC transmission market has shown promising growth, projected to reach over $22 billion by 2030. Recognizing this trend early on, Hyosung strategically positioned itself to capitalize on this burgeoning market, aligning its research and development (R&D) efforts to enhance HVDC technologies.

Hyosung's Investment in R&D

Since 2012, Hyosung Heavy Industries has been vigorously investing in localizing HVDC technology, prioritizing in-house development over reliance on foreign technologies. This commitment involves crafting essential components such as converter valves and control systems crucial to HVDC systems. Under Cho’s direction, the company initiated a series of demonstration projects to establish its competence in HVDC technology, starting with a significant 20 MW project on Jeju Island.

Over the years, Hyosung has evolved, scaling its achievements from a mere 200 MW to aiming for installations in the 2 GW range. Such advancements are critical as the company positions itself to tackle large-scale projects nationally and internationally.

Expanding Global Reach

As the energy transition accelerates worldwide, major economies are ramping up investments in both renewable energy sources and grid modernization. Hyosung is not just focused on the domestic front; it is expanding its operations into the U.S. and European markets. By enhancing its solution capabilities with technologies like ultra-high-voltage transformers and STATCOM, Hyosung is set to become a leading power solution provider.

In 2020, Hyosung took a significant step by acquiring an ultra-high-voltage transformer facility in Memphis, Tennessee. This strategic move positions Hyosung to meet the increasing U.S. demand, with contracts secured with several major technology companies already in place. With around KRW 9.3 trillion in new orders noted until August 2026, the company is solidifying its footprint in North America.

Additionally, Hyosung's participation in the CIGRE 2026 event in Paris showcased its advancements in HVDC technology, illuminating the company's strategy to synergize its offerings across the global power grid landscape.

A Vision for the Future

Chairman Cho Hyun-joon is determined to establish Hyosung Heavy Industries among the top three global power solutions providers within the next five years. By integrating HVDC systems with advanced stabilization solutions, Hyosung is aiming to foster a comprehensive approach to future energy infrastructures.

With the global HVDC market in a state of rapid evolution, Hyosung’s focused R&D efforts, keen market strategies, and innovative technology solutions represent a robust approach to addressing contemporary energy challenges. Through leadership and foresight, Hyosung is setting a standard in the development of essential technologies for future power grids, ensuring a sustainable and efficient energy future.
