TORM Completes Acquisition of ME Production
On June 3, 2025, TORM, a prominent name in the maritime industry and listed on Nasdaq, announced its full acquisition of ME Production (MEP), a Danish company recognized for its innovative approaches to marine and energy equipment. This strategic move is set to amplify TORM's environmental initiatives and technical capabilities significantly.
A Long-Standing Relationship
This acquisition marks the culmination of a fruitful partnership that began in 2018 with the establishment of a joint venture for manufacturing exhaust gas cleaning systems, also known as scrubbers, in China. Since then, both companies have collaborated closely, leading to the installation of over 70 systems on TORM’s vessels. Initially, TORM held a 75% stake in MEP, and with this acquisition of the remaining 25% from MEP's founder, Jens Peter Faldt, TORM now assumes complete control.
MEP will continue to operate independently from its headquarters in Frederikshavn, Denmark, while leveraging TORM's resources and strategic guidance. This independence is vital as it allows MEP to maintain its commitment to its diverse range of clients in both marine and industrial sectors.
Fueling Innovation and Growth
With full ownership, TORM is poised to boost MEP's role as a hub for industrial innovation by investing substantial resources into its operations. MEP focuses on the development of green energy solutions, notably advanced heat pump systems designed to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact across various platforms, including ships and industrial facilities.
Jesper S. Jensen, TORM's Head of Technical Division, expressed confidence in the potential of this acquisition, stating, "By incorporating MEP entirely into the TORM Group, we can enhance our innovation strategies and scale up technologies to align with our environmental commitments."
The partnership has already demonstrated substantial success, with TORM achieving a remarkable 40% reduction in CO₂ intensity compared to 2008 levels. This accomplishment positions TORM six years ahead of the International Maritime Organization's 2030 sustainability goals. Continued collaboration and investment in innovative solutions are deemed essential to maintain this momentum.
Commitment to Clean Technologies
MEP's future operations will broaden its offerings in the maritime and energy sectors, encompassing research, development, engineering, and manufacturing of energy-efficient marine equipment. This includes ongoing production of scrubbers and energy-saving technologies for ships and land-based applications.
Faldt highlighted the urgency of innovation in clean technologies, remarking, "In our quest to provide next-generation clean technologies, we require a robust partner and increased investment in research and development to introduce new products to the market. This acquisition comes at the perfect time for MEP to escalate its ambitions and expand its technological reach."
