Port of Corpus Christi: A New Era for Energy Exports

On June 2, 2025, the Port of Corpus Christi reached a crucial milestone by celebrating the completion of a significant national infrastructure project aimed at enhancing its ship channel. This improvement involved deepening the Corpus Christi Ship Channel to a remarkable depth of 54 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW), facilitating the safe passage of larger vessels.

This ambitious Channel Improvement Project (CIP) spans four comprehensive phases and marks a long-term vision that stretches back over thirty years. The project has increased the channel's width from 400 to 530 feet while adding additional barge shelves to accommodate the growing demand for larger ships required by port clients.

Jointly funded by Congress, the Port of Corpus Christi, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and private marine firms, this project stands as a testament to the effectiveness of public-private collaborations in advancing critical infrastructure projects. The Port's proximity to major production areas like the Eagle Ford Shale and the Permian Basin further enhances its strategic position, drawing over $65 billion in commercial investments to the Coastal Bend region in the last decade. Activities emanating from the Port of Corpus Christi also generate more than 95,000 jobs across Texas, solidifying its economic importance.

Renowned as the largest crude oil export gateway in the U.S. and the third globally, the Port effectively handles over 2.4 million barrels of crude oil daily. Additionally, it ranks as the second largest U.S. gateway for liquefied natural gas exports, moving a wide array of goods in both inbound and outbound directions.
