Komatsu Wall Launches Construction Seminar 2026 to Explore Modern Architecture

Komatsu Wall Unveils Construction Seminar 2026

Komatsu Wall Industrial Co., Ltd., headquartered in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, has announced the commencement of its 2026 Construction Seminar. This initiative, which began in 2025, serves as a platform for industry professionals and aspiring architecture students to explore the essence of architecture and the potential it can bring in the future.

The first session of the second year, themed "Inheritance of Modern Architecture," will feature Kenta Ishiguro from Nozawa Masako Architectural Workshop. The seminar will be held at the All Japan Marine Union Headquarters, a building designed by architect Masato Otaka in 1964, which recently underwent a comprehensive renovation completed in December 2024.

Exploring Architectural Possibilities

The seminar aims to delve into architectural possibilities and discuss current trends that challenge conventional practices, such as the "scrap and build" mentality. In today’s landscape, transitioning ancient legacies into contemporary values presents a fruitful avenue for exploration, making it one of the critical themes for this year's activities.

Originally launched in 2025, the seminar brings together architects, such as Hiroshi Naito, Mitsuru Senda, and Tetsuo Kobori, over nine enlightening sessions focusing on construction and production perspectives. Participants engage in discussions, reflect on the methodologies and philosophies shared by the guest speakers, and establish new networks within the architecture community. Building on the experiences from the previous year, the 2026 seminar promises to deepen these conversations further, inviting continued engagement and exploration.

First Session: Preserving Modern Architecture through Restoration and Renewal

The inaugural session for 2026 will spotlight the All Japan Marine Union Headquarters, a symbolic structure representing the history of the union. Designed by modernist architect Masato Otaka, the building has undergone significant renovations aimed at preserving its historical value while modernizing its functions for today's office needs. Completed in December 2024, the renovation marked 60 years since its inception.

Kenta Ishiguro and the team from Nozawa Masako Architectural Workshop have adopted a multifaceted approach, blending preservation and restoration with updates necessary for modern comfort. On the seminar day, participants can join a guided architectural tour by the designer himself, experiencing the vibrancy of the site where past and present coexist, moving toward a practical and actionable understanding of how to carry modern architecture into the future.
